In the spirit of collective moans...

My 13yo westie ate a stone the size of a £2 coin.

That is all.

(she is fine, more than fine, full of beans, but the bank account did not appreciate the emergency surgery)

Out of 5 household animals that's 3 that have had significant surgery in the past year. Ho hum.

On the subject of paw pads (must be insanely frustrating), can they be coated with anything or is that a really stupid idea? Some kind of polymer that could be painted on and then peeled off after a walk?

I am going to look into that paw hardener stuff.
I think (though don't know) that paw hardener products are trying to get the paw pads to actually harden using chemical. I was thinking whether there was some kind of coating that could be used to sit as a layer on top of the paw pad to take the brunt on friction forces rather than the pad. A bit like how people use hoof armour on horses

My current two were obsessed with stones until quite recently. I think it was particular textures/shapes. Very high value! I’d have to chuck them away then learned that they’d just find them again. 🙈

I like that idea, but not sure how it would peel off, potential for more issues maybe, although thinking of how rough they are, maybe not.

My moan - my dogs are treacherous.

OH has been off for the last 2 weeks, I have been at work. Usually our roles are very defined with the dogs, I do the necessary keep them alive work and day to day ensuring they remain alive, she walks with them and i at the weekends and takes lots of photos of them asleep/treats them like babies. She is now doing much of what I would do to be helpful as is home.

The dogs have now decided I am surplus to requirements, and I feel like I’ve been given a p45!

Been on the biotin for a week and we've just started back to proper road work on a short lead on which she walks very nicely. The minute she is on a flexi she turns into a headbanger (see how easy it is to train things by accident??)

The paw hardener arrived today, I was expecting a solid balm, it is the exact colour, smell and consistency of the stuff I used to slick my hair back with in the 90s!!

It's pretty much an alcohol and chlorhex gel but it has worked well for lots of the dryland dogs here!

Brillcream?!

Could you tell me the brand, please? Goose's paw is in need of something and I want to protect it as much as possible and see if it will harden up, bit squishy currently. They were both a bit bonkers on the lead from car to park yesterday, they just aren't normally on leads.

GoldLabel pad hardener and biotin/zinc supplementation are my go to for this sort of thing

As per Druid's recommendation, not Brylcreem, more like L'Oreal Studio Line or similar!!

I'm not allowing stupid leash walking any more, it means injuries for her and I've got an arthritic toe and broke a bone in my foot in the New Year, I just can't be doing with the nonsense any more, it's non-negotiable. If she pulls or lunges, we stop or go in the other direction, I don't care how long it takes. Her decision.

Fab, thanks. Ordered.

I can't allow pulling, two at at time is too much and Goose yanked my back yesterday because I stupidly bent down to pick up poo without standing on his longline. 😢

So I've had no problems since I started her on the Biotin in March. There were 120 tablets and I didn't get round to getting more when the bottle ran out. Tonight she's lame front left and right back as she's been at her paws so have ordered more. She's due a Cytopoint jab too. Could be a coincidence/she might have stepped in something weird but it's definitely interesting!

It’s been miraculous stuff for my terriers paws/claws and therefore kept him sound.

The one I have on biotin breaks nails quickly when off it or opens up his pads digging. Duoxo is safe and very handy for most minor scrapes and scratches plus things like hotspots

Thanks this seems in between her pads this time/she's eating them. Mousse, wound powder, biotin and Cytopoint ahoy. This always seems to happen when I get my training mojo back, she did her first protection session in three months on Saturday then hoppy by Wednesday, le sigh!!
