Does anyone have any? Im thinking of getting one for the 2 of my girls that live out and im wondering whether it would be better to buy the shelters with conversion fronts or not to bother and just buy gates if I ever needed to shut them in it?
Also does anyone recommend any specific ones as there is so many on the market to choose from

Thanks

redmire double shelter 24 x 12 with the overhang and the two gates - had mine 5 years now and it's 'as new'

get some rubber mats that 'bite' into the ground for the inside and you'll have 'flooring' without being illegal by putting the thing onto a concrete base

I have the 'gates'and have lined them with a sheet of marine ply bolted to the galvanised gates - I wanted this specifically for one horse that needs good air circulation. It also means that the stables never get as hot as wooden boxes do with normal stable door openings in the summer and as mine faces back to the weather there aren't any gales blowing in

redmire - not the cheapest but really sturdy and good construction and would def. recommend

thanks MM for that- ill go have a look. I recently saw a company at Newark & Notts show who gave me a very competitive quote so will have to compare them and see .

I used www.lloydsacre.co.uk they are fab and will travel anywhere in UK to build them. I have a double one both with stable door fronts and use one for storing my hay in. I would be lost without it and my horse goes in there every night for his 'sleep' and all the time in the hot weather.

ive got a redmire brochure on its way. I stabled my horses on a yard that had brand new Redmire stables and they were lovely.
Ive got lots of rubber matting that I had planned on putting inside it aswell so I can have a kind of base without having to pp in.
I had thought about having them with 2 6ft gates on and doing the same with thr boarding but didnt know whether it would be any cheaper or better doing it that way?
How much was yours if you dont mind me asking?
Also Im wanting a 24x16 shelter so will be abit more expensive but just for a rough estimate.

thanks pottamus. going to have a look as its another one I havent seen! I cant believe there are so many suppliers of them - lots of choice at least.

24 x 12 without overhang (as it would have been hit by delivery lorries at my place) 5 years ago was about £3000 delivered and put up on site

it's also in a location totally out in the open with gale force winds (I have a wind turbine as well !!) and the roof is still 100%

btw - if you want 'light' in the stables legally have a look at northern tools - they do a small solar panel 'tool shed' light for about 19 quid - tiny 6 inch flourescent type tube

not a bright light but good enough to change rugs by, hang haynets and feed by and to let the horse see you moving around

with a 24 x 16 you might want to consider two per stable or a proper solar panel 12v lighting system - again doesn'tneed PP and no leccy bills

thats not a bad price really is it. I like the idea about the solar panels as it would help quite a lot and again not expensive compared to the main things. We had thought about getting a little suitcase generator if we needed lights etc, and my dad can rig up the lights.

We bought 2 from a company- sorry the name escapes me for a moment that sells at Burghley - about six years ago when he had them on special offer and have found them very useful. Only problem we had was in a tremendous gale one year as the wind blew in and had nowhere to go so lifted one up and over a four foot post and rail fence turned it over in a complete somersault and landed it upright about 20 yards away. Not a mark on it other than a broken plastic gutter which says a lot for the strength of the construction. The field is very open and the wind sweeps across. In hindsight we should have put in extra long metal stakes in addition to those supplied by the maker. We now make sure if storms are due that we cover over the central opening and have not had a problem since. The shelter that faced away from the prevailing wind was not affected. We also found it worthwhile to pay the extra to have them lined internally to eves height . Its worthwhile checking the different specifications between manufacturers as to the timbers used as the quality varies tremendously as does the internal headroom. We also chose the option to have a clear roof panel to let a bit of light in. Keep an eye on the base on which they slide as on one or two types there seemed to be a gap which in our pessimistic eyes was an open invitation for a horse to get his foot stuck! Not sure what size your horses are but I would tend to go for as deep as you can - we were limited by the size of our gateways. Second the use of rubber floor mats. Also worth being cheeky and asking those on the shortlist for their 'best' price or having a look around at the big shows such as the Royal Show as sometimes they have exshow models at discounted prices or special 'show 'offers for orders placed at the show.

thats for all of that Eliie.

My main concern over having a mobile field shelter was that a year or so ago we had very bad winds and on my way back from doing my horses one morning I found someones stables had blown over. Dont remember why I got out of the car to check but I found the horse laid on the ground. I called the fire brigade and vet and tried to get the owner but couldnt remember where they lived. The horse was inside the stable at the time and the wind had flipped the stable and the horse and shattered his back leg. the horse was kindly PTS by the vet as this was the only we could do for him. RIP Marius.
I spoke to the guy at N&N show who said the longest he recommends is 24ft as the box skids can bend if it is any longer of this but I can have it as wide as I wasnt which is 16ft. I currently have 5 horses. The 2 horses that will live in the shelter/field are 1 16.2 and her daughter who is roughly 14.3hh atm, but that could change to any of 2 others being either a 17.2 or a 14.1hh. He also recommended that if I was worried about them moving I could use fence posts instead or/aswell as the metal rods so they would sink deeper into the ground so making it more secure.

I never had to buy any in the UK, but here I need them and there are so many to choose from. I would have plumped for wooden ones but they are very expensive and I need several.

OH wants these run ins, as the wind will shoot straight over the top and the snow shouldn't lay on them either, I've checked and they can be fitted with kick boards, painted green they won't look quite as "tinny" I hope. They are also mobile.

Good luck with your shelter hunting.

cheers - im sure there are some companys in the UK that do these too - they do look very tinny like you say.
Oh I dont know which to go for. I suppose if they have an 8wk waiting time then ive still got a little time to sort out the crap ones from the good ones and get quotes etc.

Hi E_C_W
I am another one who recommends Redmire http://www.redmire.co.uk from Five Oaks in West Sussex but I believe they install countrywide. I bought mine in May 2006. I ordered my 10 x 20 Mobile Field Shelter to allow my Cushings Horse to have freedom on the Monday and as they had it in stock it was up and running on the following Saturday, however I live very local to them! I am very fussy but I must say that I am 200% happy with it, it still looks like brand new and has saved my life. Cost about £3,000 as mine has the overhang and a partition with a grill and you can have stable doors to fit. The main thing is to ensure it faces North so that it does not get the worst of the weather in particular the wind, although I must say that I do worry when its very very windy. It is very warm and cosy when you stand in it when it is wet and windy!

Good Luck and let us know what you decide?

than you very much for this recommendation. I have got a few quotes - some are very OTT so I think they dont want the custom as they are at least £5k more than the other companies.
So we have decided to go with Redmire. They will be ordered tomorrow fist thing and they have said they will be able to get them up for the end of June. At least my old pony will have somewhere to go if she doesnt like the weather and it may mean that we fetch Willow back sooner than we excpected
