So I'm finally getting a trailer and will be able to actually go and DO THINGS with the horse instead of schooling in a deep school or hacking on awful roads... I'm very excited.

I'm currently in my manic over thinking the possibilities phase worrying about mounting blocks among other things...

I need something I can take to get on from that is sturdy but easily movable and also not going to be worth nicking if I leave it next to the car while I go hack... I love the plastic step type mounting blocks but obv they are like 150 quid and I'm not going to leave that sitting about although the likelihood of someone nicking stuff is fairly small round here.

The round green Stubbs ones are cheaper but not as tall... A bale of bedding cheaper still but much more cumbersome and again not too tall.

I'm going to have to teach The Beast to be flexible about what I use to get on, she currently isn't although is v good at the mounting block in the school now, then I can hop on from a bank or a gate or whatever. Definitely training is in order and indeed in progress.

But just wondering while I'm over thinking and over excited if anyone has any ideas or what other people do. Also any general hints and tips... This is all fairly new to me (my old girl doesn't load well so we never went anywhere) Eventually I want to be able to trailer out and hack with just me and the horse without ground assistance so my really poor hacking from my otherwise lovely yard becomes less of an issue.

Ikea two step kitchen steps are only a few quid. I have one at the yard but my horses are taught to stand next to anything so i can clamber on backwards, sideways, left, right side, over the head, etc .. it helps, lol!

If you got the white one as soon as it was covered in stains it wouldn’t probably be likely to be pinched lol.

You can get a special foldy down step thing that goes on the back of an Ifor. Not cheap tho.

I have a problem with my 17h horse as often there’s not something big enough! Where I take him to school on stubble, I have to get on on the road verge as it’s a lot higher than the road (long straight road and not busy!). Sometimes I just have to drop the stirrup and be as athletic as I can from some sort of height advantage. I definitely cannot get on without at least something!

Is it an Ifor? my friend has trained her horse to stand alongside the metal ledges behind the mudguards- theyr about 1ft wide. She stands on them to mount. I take a little wooden stool with 3 legs (so it stands on uneven ground) and just leave it by the tow hitch. No ones nicked it yet.

Depending on where you are likely to be parking there may well be a handy tree stump or gateway, I would just use those. If you are able to leave the ramp down could you hop on from the top of it?

You can get a high folding step stool from ebay for about £7. Take up no room when you're transporting kit and make a really good sized mounting block. The higher ones (can't remember the exact dimensions but a quick search will show the difference) are brilliant.

I have a little folding step ladder and use this as I am only short.I also meet up with a friend and use local pub carparks out of hours and pay the manager a fiver for the use so my ladders are usually still there on my return as I hack out at 8am and no one is around then on a Sunday morning at that time!. I usually try to hide my ladder best I can. Haven't read other replies so sorry if I am repeating myself but you can use those things that attach to your stirrup iron and make mounting easier. You can get little curver type stools from poundland I believe. you could always put a chain around your stepladders and attach to the trailer so they don't get stolen, if you placed the stepladders next to the trailer and mounted so you were away from the chain there is no risk of your horse getting caught in the chain.

I have a folding kitchen step stool that lives in the lorry as a mobile mounting block and is about the same height as a 2 step mounting block. Mainly gets used at shows, as every time I have been out hacking in the box there's been a tree stump or wall or something that's done the trick. If you're anything like me it will be a while before you're brave enough to drive a route or park somewhere without having done a recce in the car first, and checked these things out before you go with the horse.

Hahaha hahaha! How did you guess? I'll struggle to hack anywhere without having recced the whole route first to be honest. Lol. Me and the dogs are going to be getting fit too!

I use the ikea step stool, normally I can get someone to put it away but if not it is cheap enough that I don't worry too much about theft

I did that, until I went through it! foot in stirrup, other foot with a bucket wedged on, thankful to a very good pony!

Jings- thank goodness for good ponies!

I use a set of the curver steps, but only leave them out if no handy logs etc. Have also been known to use the Landy as a 'step' - not that I've fessed that to hubby...
