Mobile stable – flooring??

I have a mobile stable coming for my boy so he can live out with access to it at night. It is going in the field on skids on top of hardcore. I then plan to put hardboards down which are about 8ft by 6 ft ish and put rubber matting on top of them. Then he’ll have a deep litter bed of hemcore or similar.

Do you think this will be ok? What does everyone else put down as a floor to their stables when they’re in the field and cannot go on concrete due to planning permission?

I would say a deep bed on something like hardcore, crushed lime or something would be best as it would drain freely and not make the bed very wet? Anyone tried this?

Well in our "mobile stables" we had to put in hardcore first and then plainings on top... bashed it all down so it was crushed and then mats on top.... although I now have planning permission for them.... I would say that by putting your "mobile unit" on hardcore you are in effect making them static and non mobile as they will be on a hardstanding beit concrete or not - be careful as it will therefore require planning permission (if this is what you were trying to avoid??)

With true mobile stables they are placed on the ground with no attachments etc., so that they can easily be moved around hence the term mobile and the lack of planning permission....
 
I think it is plainings I'm using actually, is that crushed tarmac? The stable is sitting on top of the crushed tarmac so still very much mobile, it will also be on skids so easy to move.
 
I'm not attaching the boards to the stable at all, simply laying them on top of the crushed tarmac inside the stable and then laying rubber mats on top. I'm hoping the wet still manages to drain through the gaps and down into the crushed tarmac a bit.

Yep the crushed tarmac is plainings... excellent for use as a base in the stables - will prob need to put in hardcore first... dependant on the condition of the ground first.... just be careful though as they will view the fact that you had to put a hardstanding down to put the mobiles on as being a permanent base..... have you tried approaching the council for permission?
 
I'm not putting any hardcore down, just the crushed tarmac. Don't see how that can be viewed as permanent. It's not my yard so no not approached council. It's only for use as a shelter.
 
Does this land have the established use for the grazing and keeping of horses? is it green belt? are there any other buildings on the land?

Why do you ask?
 
Well if you are going to put a stable on land that does not have established use for horses and is in green belt even if it is mobile you will have trouble with the local council....and by putting down any kind of hardstanding or plainings to put the mobile stable on will normally attract the local council to enforce you to apply for planning permission or to have it removed from the land......

No the land is fine for a mobile stable, it's a huge livery yard. I was looking for advice on whether anyone had used crushed tarmac and boards and rubber as a base really or whether to not bother with boards.
 
lol... thats cool..... just dont start me on councils, planning and horses.... lol

Well personally as I said in mine - originally just put mats down but when it got wet the mud would seep up around the mats - it was awful so we put done some bricks - laid them flat then put plainings on top... bashed it down so it was fairly solid and then put rubber mats on top.... and that is all you need.. you shouldnt need to bother with the boards at all... as long as you bash down the plainings nice and flat.... and it will drain away nicely... just in time for this cold and wet weather...
 
Hiya.. mobile stables are just fab.. we have just purchased some this year. We put them in the field we rent as the farmers stables aint too good, the roofs are getting dodgy.. The mobile stables we have are on a hardcore base with some shale on top.. My guys were on shavings before when the were in the real stables but now we have them on straw as it works out better for us. They love them and use them all the time.. We have put electric in them.. Now dont all go screaming about planning etc.. I know, i know but need lights to see to muck out!!! lol..
 
lol.... dont worry.... with our mobiles my dad put in electric but put electric leads that could be unplugged so that the unit could be moved... thus the electric wasnt considered permanent... lol

What sort of skids do you have on yours?
 
We have wooden skids on ours and our lights are the same set up as yours. Our guys can come and go as they please.. We have 2 24x12 units.. one of the 24x12 units is split into 2x12x12 tho if that makes sense.. We have sorted out the electric fencing so that my big cob can go into his stable whenever he wants and my other three share the 24x12 which has a removable partition (we never have it in) and the other 12x12. They get on fab and have been together since foals so its not unusual to find the 3 of them in the 12x12!! I feel less stressed as i aint worrying about them out in the rain etc and they seem to like being free range.. lol..
