We live on a farm and have the use of a 10 x 10 ft stable and various odd shaped barns right next to the house. My 16.3hh horse put up with 10 x 10 stable all of last winter but it was tiny and really not very easy at all.

We are thinking of getting a mobile stable and putting it up in the yard. Can we do just that or will the planning people have kittens? Even a 12 x 12 would make such a difference and where we live is perfect in every other way so def. not moving nor putting horse anywhere else!!

Anyone had any experience of this?
 
Not the same situation but am looking to get mobile stables at the moment. The impression I get is that you don't need permission as long as they can be moved easily, but best to check with a friendly call to your planning office.

Which companies are you looking at? At the moment I have brochures from Chart Stables and Cozee Homes which both look good and quite cheap.
 
ooh, ooh, ooh, i went to look at some yesterday and they were ACE, just like 'normal' stables but you don't need planning. whereabouts are you? the place i went to yesterday is called um... i can't remember... it was in west dereham, in norfolk, hang on, i'll find a link for you.

and... my biggest worry was not being able to put down hardstanding... but apparently you can put down those big ex-council paving stones which are strong enough for horses, and they don't need planning. whack some rubber mats on... and hey presto, they are 'real' stables...

Where we want to put the stable is currently being used as a "trailer park" for the trusty rice trailer. It has hardstanding already and we thought if we concreted it that that would be ok. The rest of the yard is concreted and its a huge yard!!
 
F J Lucas and Son is the company i saw yesterday, and was VERY impressed by their mobile ones (i even wrote a post in NL about it!) - their website is shockingly bad... but in the flesh they are yummy.

if you've got hardstanding already... you'll be fine!

mobile stables tend to be slightly costier, as they are the normal stable with added metal 'skids'. for us, it would work out cheaper as we wouldn't need to lay the hardstanding (v expensive), but if you've already got the hardstanding... it might be cheaper for you to go down the route of 'real' stables and getting planning? xx
 
Strictly speaking in planning law mobile stables do require planning permission (whatever the people selling them tell you).

Some planing departments are more flexible than others so it is best to get an answer in writing from them so that if there is a problem in future you have a copy of their letter.
 
Speak to an agricultural land agent rather than directly to the planners.I would go to white and sons at Dorking if you are in the surrey area.
 
we have one, but the planner did come out to inspect it. As we are in an 'area of outstanding natural beauty' (and I suspect you are too as you're only a few miles away) It has to be moved 'a considerable distance at least every 6 months' although we have only moved ours once in nearly two years, just after the planning officer came out and put an enforcement notice on it because it hadn't been moved

. I think it depends on your neighbours alot, our immediate neighbours are very pleasant, but there are some in the village who are very vocal about planning issues and would have no hesitaion in reporting us if they new it was there

i saw a used one on ebay recently that was relisted as the original buyer had bought it, contacted her council and they said she couldnt even have a mobile one, hence she pulled out of the sale so def worth checking!
