Moisturising hooves

When I bought George he was a bit low at his heals and his front feet were huge and quite wide so the farrier has been trimming and shoeing his feet slightly differently to improve things - which it has greatly. However he had to have a loose shoe nailed back on today less than 3 weeks after being shod and I've noticed that his feet are a bit cracked around the nail holes. What is the best thing to do about this? I have been using Kevin Bacon's on dry clean hooves a few times a week, is this the right thing to do or should I be doing something else? Thanks

Feed sunflower seeds and put the Kevin Bacon on daily and you'll have hooves of iron in no time!!!

I have horrid Tb hooves, and it was suggested that I should scrub with dilute hydrogen peroxide daily to reduce the bacterial/ fungal action on the nail holes and then apply copious amounts of veg oil. works a treat.!

Where do you get the sunflower seeds from, and how do they help? never heard of this so would be interested to hear more

We use pure Veg Oil too its excellent have heard great things about the Kevin Bacon stuff we had a pony with very poor feet when he arrived so he was put on the EquiLife balancer the diefference in 3 months was remarkable and he now off it ...thank heavens as its not cheap

When my horse's have finished working they always get the sand washed off their legs and I put the effol moisture hoof cream on for dry/crumbling/splitting hooves. The sand is awful for their hooves but the effol stuff seems to work great, it also seems good to try and get it on when the hooves are still wet, might keep a bit more moisture in?

I use effol too. Its very good for our horses (all unshod)

I have a Hann x TB & we use Kevin Bacons on his hooves, it doesn't cure all ills but I believe it prevents a lot. Your farriuer will probably recommend it but don't buy from him, the mark up is ridiculous. I pay just under £10 for a tub & it lasts ages.

I found normal human hand/nail cream worked well! You can get cheapo stuff from Tesco in pretty big bottles. I just squeezed some out onto a hoof oil brush and brushed on. Cheaper than most horsey applications (as is usually the case!).

Star's feet became quite dry, and I used Cornucrescine on a regular basis - with a really good result.

I feed Farriers formula excellent stuff, best to ask your farrier mine suggested what to feed mine.

I use Sainsburys own Corn Oil - both in feed and on hooves. My farrier can't believe the difference and now recommends it to all his clients but he calls it Gaynor's secret formula!!! I keep telling him it's only £1.39 from S'burys....
