Molasses in Hoofkind!!!... laminitis!!!

Many thanks to you all for your help and advice. I hope this has helped others with feed issues… its probably got some of us re-thinking too. What feed is safe?!! I totally agree that there should be some legislation with labelling of horse feed and for laminitics especially – they seem to just hide the ingredients/sugar/starch content on the bags.

I have started to do an analysis of all these different feeds but this will take me a while to do or unless someone has already done this exercise before and can advise me that would be a great help. I am now thinking about how much sugar/starch there is in high fibre cubes too.

My Shetland is improving since Saturday and is on constant ‘foot and feed monitoring watch’. I did speak to the Hoofkind people and they did say that the feed is suitable for laminitics (says it on their bags!!!!) and the molasses/sugar content should be ok which it clearly isn’t when I told them about the half a brick (of possible molasses) I found at the bottom of the bag. I am to provide them details of the batch no. etc for them to investigate.

Thanks again – please still keep advising. Another help would be if you could all advise me of the feed content from your bags. I have been looking at manufacturers websites and emailing them for details but I do wonder if they advise differently on their websites and feed bags!

Glad to hear your shetland is improving

Have a read of this...there are a few feed ingredients listed on there:

I feed Fast Fibre to my lot. It contains 5% starch and 2% sugar...it works for mine so far
