Is it just at our yard that moles become increasingly more industrious in the autumn/winter. We have mole hills in the summer but so many more in the autumn/winter.

Yes there are always more molehills over the winter, I think its because they come up to higher tunnels when the ground is saturated and the soil is softer so they dig up more ground. We always have the most in January and February which is really annoying because when the molehills freeze they are more dangerous for the horses.

We’ve got a small paddock near the house and that always gets molehills over the winter months! They seems to bugger off by summer but always come back!

We rarely get them in the fields but a while back we had a couple of mole hills appear one morning on our tiny front lawn , which slopes down to the road . The next day , as we took the dogs out for a walk , we noticed that the molehills had increased in size and number , and that we now had a line of them going from one side to the other , with the grass almost completely covered in soil . We went off for our walk and when we returned , an hour or so later , someone had set a couple of mole traps up on the lawn . Over the following couple of days yet more mounds appeared and then one morning we went out to find all the mole traps gone and a mole the size of a small guinea pig hanging from the gate post .
Never found out who it was on Mole Control Patrol , but very grateful nonetheless . The joys of living in a small village !
