Responded in vets thread, dengie hi fi do one for lammis or Allen and page fast fibre, add to either of these a broad spec vit and mineral supplement , 1/4 scoop shoul be ample, if feeding fast fibre you need to soak for 60 secs with x2 volume of water
Dengie seem to have a range of feeds and chaffs that are described as suitable for laminitics Hi-Fi Lite and Molasses Free, are two of them. Alfa-Beet might count too, but not 100% sure...
Id stick to the hi fi not Alfa as pony is barefoot and a bit footy... Sure that Alfa is considered 'less good' for barefoot, Cant remember why but sure someone with more barefoot knowledge than me posted this, someone will be able to enlighten
I would first of all ask why it needs feed, other than ell soaked hay, unless the lamintis us caused by something other than weight and sugar intake. If it is need to get supplements in, rather than for callorific content, then a small amount of oat straw chaff would be suitable,
He is being fed bucket feeds as when he was slowly loosing the weight, which he needed to shift, he went from loosing it slowly to suddenly it just dropping off and came out of winter looking very poor. The vet agreed that it would do him no harm in putting some weight back on.
If you don't like feeding alfalfa (which mine hates the taste of) then Allen and Page Fast Fibre. It doesn't need a vit and min supplement, that's included in it if I recall correctly, so cheaper for you. You add a lot of water to it so it was good for my lami that wasn't drinking much. Takes a while to eat too so gives them something to do.
If alfalfa is ok then Topspec do an unmolassed chaff thats quite good. The dengie ones have oil in them instead of the molasses so would be good for maintaining weight. I had the topspec one and I DID have to add vits/mins.
I have my mare (had lami in one foot) on an equal mix of A&P Fast Fibre and A&P 'L' Mix - she started to turn her nose up at the FF on its own, but loves it with the L mix (which is very low starch/sugar content) but it has to be fed with a chaff or similar.
To those that are feeding ff how much would you have to give to ensure the horse or pony gets it recommended daily amount of vit and min ??? Surely it would be better to give something that has no vit/mins and add the needed amount ???
