One part of me thinks wow - the other thinks its a bit weird, but then I guess as long as the pony is happy - horses are put through much worse things :)
 
Completely agree. What a pony and would shake the hand of the man who saw spirit in the pony yet and gave her another chance when so many wouldn't
 
not to forget all horses and ponies live around a flight survival instinct- i highly doubt this one is going to be able to run very fast on that leg, and won't it be dangerous if it gets spooked? which surely is going to be stressful for the pony. - true it's an amazing idea but maybe people need to remember that animals are never going to be human, no matter how much we treat them like humans.

This pony was discussed on here - in considerable depth - some time ago.
I disagree with it and think the poor animal should have been put down.

Sorry I did not know this, perhaps I should have been put down years ago, this pony goes around to visit disabled children and inspires them to carry on with their lives. I did not want to create an issue on here just thought it was amazing to see, I would have loved to have met her, when I thought that life was not worth living anymore. Other articles I have seen show that the pony has a very good quality of life, and perhaps we should not be so quick to judge. I regret any offence that my post may have caused this was not my intention,
 
i think this is very similar to the bionic vet situation. if the pony is happy and healthy and comfortable i dont see an issue providing that if at anytime the welfare of that pony changes appropriate action is taken!
 
why do any animals that are either deformed or as in this case, not perfect- but in loving and caring homes and leading a comparatively healthy happy lifehave to be condemned????

Unlimited love and care will not guarentee a happy, healthy life, and often impairs that ability to 'compare'.

Maybe she is a happy pony, but I doubt it. Ponys want friends to socilise with, space to run about it and painfree limbs (the feeling of being 'trapped' by the inability to run is incredible stressful for a horse). How much of that does Molly have?
 
this is in the realms of the bionic vet, while I am not sure that it is a totally good thing, if people are willing to pay the money to keep their animals with a good quality of life then, well perhaps, who am I to judge. I live with an amputee dog, he does well on 3 legs and his quality of life is good.

I do not think molly's quality of life does suffer mainly due to this statement

The prosthetic has given Molly a whole new life, Allison Barca DVM, Molly’s regular vet, reports. And she asks for it! She will put her little limb out and come to you and let you know that she wants you to put it on. Sometimes she wants you to take it off too. And sometimes, Molly gets away from Barca. “It can be pretty bad when you can’t catch a three-legged horse”, she laughs

She is a very lucky horse that has owners with the resources to allow this feat of engineering and I get the impression that if she were to suffer she would be PTS, however if I found myself in this situation, I would have to PTS as I would not have the resources at my disposal to go down this route.
 
My daughters pony of 14 years got hit by a 4x4 and his back leg smashed.
If i could have afforded this i would have done it.
The pony did not want to die, he had many uyears of mischief left. Knowing him he would have proudly showed off his new leg. He is the only one of my horses that would have been suitable. There is no way i would have tried with any of the others due to their charactors.
Each horse is different, each circumstance is different, one rule for all would be wrong.

I am torn on this one, but all the youtube videos I can find are of her clearly "lame" on that leg - head very much nodding. :( I would be interested to see a video of her moving free in the field, rather than being led.
 
I'm not sure this is right. I don't think I could do this to either of mine but then I don't know the animal. What sort of life can it lead like this?:confused:
 
If this is the pony I am thinking of she was 'saved' after a hurricane in the US. What I cannot condone (if it is) was the amount of suffering she went through before the amputation and the money spent on a 3 legged pony when so many people had lost limbs and without an NHS were having trouble getting far less sophisticated prosthetics than this. The number of animals who died who could have been saved for half the cost of the treatment that pony went through.

Doesn't sit right with me.
 
So long as she is happy, healthy and pain free and has an excellent quality of life, which by the sounds of it she does have then I see nothing wrong in giving her a few more years living peacefully and contentedly.

There are numerous horses much closer to home who are in pain or doped up to their eyeballs to be pain free and many owners think this is perfectly acceptable.

Horses for courses, it wouldn't suit every horse but it seems to suit this one.
 
tbh, everything about this makes me feel unconfortable.
I could never put any animal of mine though this as in this case it sounds like she suffered a great deal before they amputated the leg.
