It's one of the ring sports (a bit like IPO on steroids ) and is dominated by Belgian Malinois, GSDs do also compete
No tracking exercises, it's all obedience/agility and bitework on a full body suit, dogs can target the back, legs as well as the arm and take the helper down from behind, off a bicycle etc.
Some nifty tricks like the object guard, out/recall to a whistle, scaling huge obstacles etc etc etc.
The world championships are happening as we speak and there are competitors from the UK.
Thanks cc I'm here at the moment, but Boyf to into it to sit and explain things and I want to know!
there was one shep yesterday in level one and the cutesy thing that it ate the meet thrown out of the boat and then stuck it's head in for more! The Mali's Are apparently deemed better for the job and there ate some Dutch Shepard here too ( look at me knowledge!!) I just want to know what is it basically it's just a comp? Do they hVe to qualify? Etc just some bCk ground info!
Not sure about qualifications etc as anyone I do know who is into the sport is either there or was at the WUSVs in Austria over the weekend! It's just a sport/comp like IPO as you say. Malinois are the most popular breed/are most successful in the sport...GSDs used to look and act more like Malinois in terms of their size, shape, height, weight, build, colour but that's a different arguement for a different day.
If you get a good Malinois, they look amazing, if you get a bad one, you get a terrible one - they are true fight or flight dogs, the poorer ones have issues with noise sensitivity and fear of crowds etc but the good ones look spectacular.
As far as I know, Mondio means world, and MondioRing is sort of a mixture of all the ring dog sports that occur in different countries-Belgian ring, French ring, schutzhund etc. By ring sport they mean stuff that is done in an arena (rather than tracking which is in open fields or moorland). Sometimes the arena is set up to resemble a situation, ie a circus, or a station, or a street. It all looks a bit frantic to me- but basically its the dog against the helper. And yes, it is a competition but sometimes service dogs take part.
