I'm too old now and my back has gone but I have always thought it would be brill to have some freelance grooms at competitions, particularly BE. I'm often on my own and it would be really nice to have someone stud up, look after my horse whilst I walked the course, help load etc. Very often I only need someone for 5mins, so wouldnt it be great if you could say to secretary on arrival, I'd like a groom today, they give you a mobile number and the groom could work round the lorry park. I think they would make a fortune, I'd be more than happy to pay someone 10 quid to stud up for me. Do you think it would work?

Nice idea and probably good advertising for the grooms if they were trying to find a more permanent job, but isn't eventing expensive enough without the extra of a groom? Then you may see a divide, those that can afford it and those that can't. I certainly couldn't, as I event on a shoestring (when I've got something to compete, that is

I couldn't afford to pay a groom and compete, plus don't actually need one as like to do things myself.

However I would gladly pay £10 as insurance for someone to keep an eye on me in case I come a cropper and more if horse had to be taken home etc.

If you could get a few people to do this, could be lucrative

Its a good idea, used to get it a lot at eventing and sj competitions in SA. The grooms would hang about asking if someone needed them to hold their horses etc. If it wasn't too expensive per hour then they could chose how long they needed a groom for and the groom could do several horses in a day making it worthwhile.

That would be a fab idea - I've had to wander round hoping some nice person would offer to hold my horse while I walk the course when i've been on my own.
