Money offered to look after people's horses?

Hi all,

I have a history of asking difficult questions, so here's another one for the finest minds!

Okay, since my profession gives me flexibility time wise, occasionally on the local FB horse group I offer help between the days in not working. Last time round I got lots of responses. Even a couple offering to pay me...

What's the best way to respond? Obviously, I'd be happy being compensated for my troubles. But should I set a rate, or ask what they'd be prepared to offer. Bear in mind I don't have equine qualifications, although I've been riding/grooming for all sorts of people for many years.

Tax, national insurance and insurance implications all round.

If you're doing friends favours then you can settle for public liability and checking terms of vet insurance (horse you're caring for escapes onto road type scenarios/you make mistake and horse injured etc) and accept a nice bottle as a pressie.

If you actually want/need the money you are becoming a freelance groom and running a business.

I pay £10 a morning for someone to poo pick and fill haynets. Although she also gets use of the horse on those days. She is very experienced.
A young child poo picks occasionally and helps on the yard, for that I give her a ride on the horse and a small lesson
