I for one and getting sick of paying ridiculous amounts for horse stuff so I am on a mission to save as much money as possible this year, feel free to add your own ideas.

So far

I needed new stable bandages for B as the old ones had ruined, I had a old fleece blanket at home, cut this into strips. Ta-da bandages

Also last year I spent a lot on feed because I was struggling to keep B warm enough, made a fleece hoodie out of another old blanket :)

One of the horses I excerisise's saddle kept slipping quite badly, I didn't want to pay £40 for a special pad to stop it, when in poundland I saw special pad that is designed to go under plates.

Poundland were also selling vetwrap

Please add on your own :)

I make my own fly spray using this 'recipe'!

FLY SPRAY RECIPE:

make in 2 litre bottle

1 table spoon meths spirit
2 table spoon vinegar
1table spoon washing up liquid
25 drops citronella oil

Fill the rest of the bottle up with water.

Sell the horse & get a bike, only way to really save ! Seriously though, I get the farrier out when the horse/pony actually are ready to shoe & don't follow a strict regime of 5/6/7/8/weeks whatever. The odd week, or even two, they go over their normal shoeing period can add up to money saved over a year. Never scrimp when they need shoeing mind.

Agree with polldark.

- ebay
- carrots/apples instead of horse treats, they are much cheaper and probably healthier too
- Good mineral lick in field and stable (which are very cheap to buy). You might be able to not use supplements that cost a fortune)
- buckets from b&q etc.
- Storage from poundland
- Repair your rugs, I will be repairing for the first time this year, instead of replacing my rugs.
- Buy quality.. not quantity
- Wait 'till start of winter to buy in hay/straw as it's often sold off cheaper
- Look after your things, keep them clean and in good shape, you won't have to replace them as often.
- Keep on top of worming, grooming, greasing feet. as this will save you money in the long run, avoid vet bills and farrier bills etc.
- Buy quality feed and hay instead of buying loads of not so good feed
- Make your own flyspray and mane/tail spray

eta: I forgot, don't buy stuff YOU DON'T NEED. Put a small amount of money back each month (I usually put about 30e back) for things you would like.. That way you can save and get something nice when you have the money instead of buying cheap stuff at the time, which will be more expensive in the long run as will need replacing quicker.

The best money saving idea that saved me hundreds of pounds was to use the Moneysavingexpert site. I saved hundreds of pounds and have more money for the horses :D

I have just changed my electricity supplier and will save another £250 this year.

Make the most of every time you ride, don't just "go through the motions" ride the best that you can every time you get on, and practise between lessons to get the most from them.Repair tack and rugs yourself before they get too bad.

I buy everything from Ebay. That saves me a great deal :)

I don't feed when it's not neccessary. I always try to share transport to comps, there's always usually someone who wants to come along and pay towards fuel and if you were going anyway :)

I buy stuff in the sales and put it away!

Just bought winter yard jacket etc in the sales and put it away until I need it. Likewise....look out for 'summer' things in winter sales. You might think 'oh well I dont need it now...' but it does really help save money!

Repair things rather than replacing them, I bought some special fabric adhesive & have repaired a tear in a rug easily.

I buy quite a lot through Ebay which can save money. The main thing is think ahead & buy things you will need for winter in the spring when the winter items have been reduced & do likewise throughout the seasons. You can save a fortune buying fly rugs & grazing muzzles in the autumn & winter turnout rugs in the spring. ;)

Tesco value baby shampoo is 8p a bottle, cheaper than £7 for a bottle of horse shampoo and does the job fine!

Scrump apples from your neighbours - have an agreement with mine that i can have as many windfalls as i care to collect.
