Some of them seem to forget that the roads they are driving on were once fields that we could ride in!
And no thats not a cry back to the dark ages. In the last 20 years where I used to ride has lost about 80% of its off road riding to new 'urban villages'.

To be fair, I can't abide riders who piddle about two abreast and dont say thanks either...

Ditto
I can understand why car drivers can get annoyed with horse riders at times....they annoy me at times, quite a lot of them are rude and don't have any respect for people in cars.
A smile or a nod doesnt cost a penny and why riders have to ride two abreast on narrow roads and blind bends or over bridges I'll never know.
if you own a horse you should own land to exercise it or you shouldnt own a horse !

So does the same apply to dog owners and people with children?? You should have a big enough garden to play in and not need to use a park for either child or dog??
Have to agree that people who do not thank nice drivers annoys me lots.
too annoyed to read past the first page what absolute TW*TS!!!!the OP wtf is he going on about??!!how does he think we get to all these fields and bridleways, and as for the guy with the a4..... i hope he crashes into a tree. god thats wound me up
i find it quite upsetting knowing that some car drivers have this sort of attitude. i ALWAYS think of everybody else on the road when i have to ride out on one, whatever mode of transport they are using. i always am courteous and thank all drivers, move out of the way when i can and try to be as safe as i can.
so why do i still get abuse from drivers, get driven too close to, what have i done to deserve that?
i can't belive that some drivers have the mentality to do this sort of thing.
i was stopped yesterday by a BSM driving instructor who asked about horses slipping on painted surfaces on the road, he was a caring driving instructor who was obviously going to tell his learner drivers a little about driving around horses.
so thumbs up for BSM, i'm glad somebody has some sense.

Hummm... we always ride two abreast - as recommended to us by the Greater Manchester Police Mounted Unit. We're not piddling about though
and I always thank drivers who slow down and pass wide.
I find if we ride single file cars simply pass faster and closer. If you ride two abreast they have no choice but to slow down and pull out properly round you. Most drivers are fine with this as we always smile and wave a thanks. The occasional idiot yells abuse but we simply refer them to our friends at the GMP mounted branch, which seems to shut them up.
I haven't looked at that thread - it'd wind me up far too much.
To be fair to some of the comments on theose threads, they aren't too far wrong.
You only have to meet a couple of inconsiderate arsehole horse riders taking up half of the road, making it dangerous to pass and not thanking you for slowing down to decide that everyone who owns a horse is the same.
Personally since my last confrontation out riding I couldn't think of anything worse than hacking out on anything larger than a small country lane, luckily for myself I don't have to.
well one day one of those impatient a***holes will cause a massive accident and possibly cause a death and because they have been so vocal about how much horses annoy them, they will be blamed for everything.
I hope it never happens, but it might make them stfu about something they know nothing about.
It is annoying when people don't know the rules of the road and don't thank you, but seriously, it's what? all of an extra couple of minutes on your journey? if they live in the country or near somewhere they know will have riders on the road- get up earlier and leave home 10 minutes earlier to allow being stuck behind horses. where's the chore in that?
I'm more concerned about people who haven't passed a driving test and having no insurance etc driving around like a complete moron at 60 mph in 2 tonnes of metal.
It's a very entertaining thread on MSE.
My personal bugbear is old men - they never seem to slow down - and don't getme started on cyclists who pass me on the inside pedalling on the pavement, you can't even hear them, they frighten ME appearing out of nowhere, let alone my fizzy TB.

Are you really that self involved you cannot see this from a non horsey motorist point of view?
They pay hundreds of pounds in road tax every year- horse rider's don't.
They pay hundreds of pounds in compulsary insurance every year for their cars, horse rider's have no such obligation.
They understand how dangerous it is the have a horse on the road (It is, there need not be an argument about it because no matter how amazing your horse is on the road there will always be the margin for error)
they understand that it is rude and annoying when you get stuck behind horse riders who are too busy talking to move into the side, not only for the motorist, but also for the horse's wellbeing, this IS ignorant.
Honestly, if I were just a driver, and I were driving past the amount of idiots on horses I have recently, I would absolutely hate us all.
it's all well and good saying "the horse was here before the car" but when we realise we're the minority now and we have to consider motorists views we might get somewhere.
To be fair Rosie, I agree with your point of view on that one. We own a loud car (15yo, we can't help that she's a bit noisy). We were driving over through middleton towards the fields at the back (in northants, I'm hoping whoever it was sees this and is thoroughly ashamed of themselves!) and came upon two riders riding two abreast on a sharp corner. We pulled over and switched the engine off, aware that changing gear and overtaking would frighten the horses, as would creeping behind until we'd passed the corner. The ignorant women just blanked us!!! No thankyou, nothing, they just carried on talking amongst themselves. When we over took a few moments later one turned and glared at us
. My OH refused to stop so I could get out and give them a mouthful. I've since seen the horses and owners up at one of those fields at the back. Its those kind of people who give riders a bad name. I cannot hack out with my daughter as it's too damn dangerous... all because of idiots who cannot be courteous to drivers. I don't NEED people to slow down with the older pony because he's bombproof, but the younger one is a little bit shy, and I'm so grateful to those who DO slow down whichever pony we're out with because I know they'll slow down next time for us when we might be needing them to slow down.
It would be easy to amble along reins in one hand and think "slow down, don't slow down, it doesnt matter because my horse is safe" but when we're out with just the younger one we NEED drivers to slow down, because that will give that pony a positive attitude to cars and hacking out. ALL riders would do well to remember that.
It's a rum un isn't it? I just bought a hiviz vest that reads "CAUTION - YOUNG HORSE IN TRAINING" . My horse is 11 years old!!
I did this because if I'd have bought one that read "PLEASE PASS WIDE AND SLOW", I can imagine some moron with an "ain't noone gonna tell me what to do" attitude, doing exactly the opposite.
I felt quite sad reading that, the truth of it is a vast majority of us work incredibly hard for our horses and are courteous, polite road users who would rather avoid the road than ride on it.
Those horse riders who cannot be bothered to make an effort to do any Horsey PR seem to have done quite a bit of damage.
In regards to the poop on the pavement, that really is disgusting and they should NOT have been on the pavement.
why riders have to ride two abreast on narrow roads and blind bends or over bridges I'll never know.

Have you ever sat on a horse that spins in front of traffic? People ride two abreast to exercise non traffic proof horses safely and to try to traffic train them. The police always exercise horses two abreast.
OOOOHHHH That REALLY riled me. I have locked myself out of MSE for forgetting my password, just going to work on getting back on and rearranging a few faces (metaphorically speaking!)
Oh, and to those reading this who don't bother their bottoms to thank coureteous drivers, I hope you are struck by a lightbulb and change your ways immediately. It might not be your horse who ends up with a broken leg flailing around in pain because of a car driver with an attitude like this lot (as a result of your bad manners), it might be MINE.
