monthly costs?

Hi, I am trying to figure out monthly costs, for owning a horse,

I dont have a horse yet, but this is what I thought, please correct me if I am wrong :)

livery: £100 per month
feed: £15 - £20 per month
insurance : e nd l - £25 per month
vet health plan : £17 per month
farrier : £40 every 6 weeks
bedding: £20 per month (1 bale is £2.50)

is there anything I have missed of?

Hay - or is that included in feed, My farrier is £65, What about lessons, general tack /rug purchases i generally budget £50 for misc
 
A few things -
Think you'd be lucky to find livery for £100 a month!
Stay clear of E&L as they are VERY slow at paying
If you are insuring do you really need a vet's health plan?
You'd be very lucky to find bedding for 2.50 per bale, unless using straw?
You have forgotten hay/haylage, which is a massive expense!
 
The cost of keeping my horse at DIY, buying hay,feed, shoes etc comes to between £200-280 a month

I think you need to generally factor in around £200-300pcm depending on where you live to keep diy
 
My monthly budget is £360 on DIY livery to cover everything including fuel for travelling, lessons, comp fees etc. I come in nearer £300 on average but like to make sure I have the extra there if needed.

My insurance is closer to £50 a month (including tack and trailer) with Scottish Equestrian who were fab with our £4k bill for our last horse and are always easy to deal with. Have a look at peoples experiences with E and L - could be a false economy!

Shipley - Does your horse have shoes? I'm hoping mine will be barefoot :)

zoon - Can you reccommend any other insurance companies? I've heard they are the best from various other people :eek:

Vets health plan varies in price for what you want, for£17 a month it includes tetnas, and flu vaccinations, annual health check, annual dentist check, worm count, and one bottle of fly spray; throughout the cost of the year i saves about £30

Yeah, straw is £2.50, shaving £5.50

I'd be getting to the yard by Bus, and i have a free Bus pass for weekdays; but thanks - I had forgotten that :)

Well, I'd phone around a few livery yards to get accurate livery prices and what is included. That will help you to get a better idea of your costs. It might work out cheaper to go on Assisted DIY for example.

I'm on DIY livery and pay £25 a week (£108.33 a month), Hay is £25 a month, Straw £20 a month, Insurance £35 a month, Farrier £65 every 6 weeks, Feed approx £15 a month, School hire £20 a month, Apples & Carrots £10 a month!!! I spend £20 a week on fuel getting to the yard.

Going to depend hugely on where you are as prices vary wildly.

Mind you,I think most would agree that however much you have spare will find it's way into your horse budget-I have never been able to leave a tack shop with only what I went in for when I had one of my own :p

My feed bill for Ted is £85/month approx (not including hay/straw, just hard feed and carrots)
His feet are £65 every 6 weeks.
£30/month meds for arthritis,
£40/month hay,
£30/month bedding,
then obviously wormers, dentistry, flu vaccinations
£37/month insurance.

In order to hack Ted I have to have the box, which costs £190 insurance/year plus mot and fuel.

Unfortunately Ted refuses to live out in summer and our grazing is poor so the hay and straw is also needed during summer not just winter.

Thankfully we don't have to pay livery as he is kept at my parents foc, otherwise I couldn't afford him.
 
Mine is:

Field/stables rent: £90 per month
Feed (incuding carrots and supplements): £10-£20 per month (depending on time of year, this goes down to £0- £5 in June to September/October).
Bedding: From October- June, about £20- £30 a month.
Shoes: £52 for a set of 4 every 8-9 weeks.
Hay: Approx. £200 a year.
Worming: About £11.00 4 times a year (I buy my wormers online so it's cheap).
Insurance: NFU £26 something a month.
Vaccination/teeth floating in October: approx. £95.
Indoor school rental at nearby livery stable in winter: £20- £30 a month.

Then there is the misc stuff like fly spray in summer, shows, trailer rental, tack, buying new wellies as I destroy mine, buying new riding helmets as I've destroyed my two.

I don't have any travel costs as I don't drive and ride my bike everywhere!

Geez, I feel depressed now that i've written this list and see who much money I go through!!

teeth, back, physio, chiro as and when usually £50 a go
lessons £120 a month

trailer ins £5
horse ins £35
then always something - new rug, headcollar, fly spray etc.

not adding it up will depress me!! but i dont drink, smoke or eat alot!! and have no other hobbies so hey ho its only money!!!!!!!!
