monty roberts join up

So i was watching a video on monty roberts and his join up exercise and thought il try this with my mare. i dont have a round pen or an arena just a field but thought id try it anyway. well worked well for about 30 seconds trotting in a circle round me but then as i tried to send her on a bit she turned to face me ans was rearing right up on her end she didnt come for me but i didnt know what to do so i raised my arms and squeled like a horse!!?? She tried to buck at me a couple of times to but once i stopped she was fine was fit to pet her lift her feet everything. has anyone else had any experiences like this?

Watching a video isn't the same as actually watching it live as it were or being taught. The reason he uses a round pen is so that he can control how far / close the horse is to him and therefore if the horse even begins to think of rearing / kicking out he can send it away, also there are no corners for the horse to stop and spin at. When he's sending a horse away he looks at it in the eye as this is threatening and helps to keep it moving, then when he feels the horse responding I.e coming closer, licking chewing etc he'll move his eye to the shoulder. I used to ride for a lady that trained with him and Kelly and its a great thing to witness even if when you break it down it's just common sense. I don't mean to sound patronising so I really hope I don't but go on a course and learn to do it properly. It won't take 5 minutes like it does in a video.
