Following on from my other post last week about Baron having no self confidence when I try to hack him alone I am wanting to build up his confidence in himself and trust in me. I have tried EVERYTHING and now natural horsemanship is my last attemps at doing it myself before sending him away to be sorted proffesionally (and I know that wont be done with the nice approach).

So it was suggested that Monty Roberts and Kelly Marks type training may help. Also suggested I try Join Up.

So I am planning to get the Monty Roberts Join Up book but wanted suggestions of others I could get. There are quite a few, the Perfect Confidence by Kelly Marks seems to be the right one but I really want to choose the right book for what I am aiming for.

Ideas?

Definately the Kelly Marks book, both Perfect Confidence and Perfect Manners, they are full of brilliant, sensible advice about how to build up the bond with your horse and create the trust between you.

I wouldn't advise doing join up with your horse without expert advice and guidance, if it goes horribly wrong (and it can) it will take even longer for your horse to trust you, and for you to repair your self confidence. If you got to the Monty Roberts/Kelly Marks website you'll find a list of RA'S, Recommended Associates. You can always ring any of them up for advice, they don't bite, they are nice people!! Or you could get an RA to come out and give you a hand, just to get you going on the right track.

I'd start with the Perfect Manners book if I were you, do some of the groundwork exercises in the book and take it from there.

Ditto that, both books are excellent, totally practical and are aimed at improving 'normal' riding realtionships you dont have to ride around with just a bit of string or wearing a cowboy hat.

Me too! I have all 3 and I wouldn't be without them. Also Monty's book 'From my Hands to Yours' has loads of good general advice and information.

Thanks. I will got with Kelly's books then and see how we get on

I am getting someone out, hopefully around easter time to deal with the 'actual' problem. I just wanted to get the general idea and perhaps get him used to the whole concept before I get someone out.
