Help me!!!!
I moved my mums old mare back with me yesterday to ride her as she is very fat. She has always been bomb proof and very placid, if a little stubborn! She's 17. I have 2 small pony mares at home and i don't like introducing straight away, so i moved them one paddock up so mum's mare will be beside them, but segragated. Anyhow, there's been hell on!! Basically, mums mare is acting almost stallion like!! She is teasing one of my mares over the fence which has bought the pony highly in season, literally standing there squirting! Mum's mare is pacing up and down fence line(which is proving great for her waistline!)
I daren't run them together for fear of accidents but am a little concerned at this bizarre behaviour. Short of climbing up post and rail and mounting her she is doing everything but. I have also had to wear a hat and put a bridle on her to being her in today as she's so agitated. Once inn tho and i've bought the other 2 in she goes to sleep. Do you just think she's going to need time to settle in? Bear in mind that she's been virtually unhandled for the last 2 years. Or should i wait till next week and get vet out or try oestress or something. Any feedback would help, please!!

Has she been with other mares in the past and if so is she normally in charge? My mare is like this (hence my Mardymare sign in lol). She can also act stallion like in front of a gelding if she feels threatend by him. She has 'her friends' and wont let anyone else near them. I remember when we arrived at our previous yard she charged up to the fence pawing the ground and rearing at the other horses and she didnt even know them!!

Some first impressions everyone got lol. I am not entirely sure what it all means or at 17 if it still involves hormones (sorry) but I put my mare on Frisky mare supplement and it really helped. But hopefully someone else will come up with why they behave like that and then you will be able to work something out from there. Perhaps she is feeling a bit threatened by the other or perhaps just really pleased for a friend

My mare turns into a stallion as soon as she meets a strange horse/gets loose and goes near the geldings, I wouldnt worry yet and give her time to settle

i kept her at a livery yard for about 3 years where she was generally mid pack and did not display any threatening behaviour at all. Since she's been back at mums she's been running with a 4 year old gelding and a 2 year old filly, she was dominant there for the first time in her life. Do you think it may have gone to her head a bit?? She honestly was so gentle and placid before and she is totally the opposite now!

Mine is gentle and placid too once she settles. just give her time - its probably all just a shock to the system. I know mine likes routine and likes her little circle of friends. Each time i have moved she has behaved like this. she also has a strange effect on other mares causing them to be all marish lol. maybe they are just girly girls lol
