My horse had this and his eye was removed in January of this year. It is a really painful condition. I would get a vet out to check his eye for you to confirm if he does have this. Removal of the eye is not always necessary, my boy had his removed as he was totally blind in in anyway and it was causing so much pain that to lose it was the best way forward for him. If there is sight still in the eye i think a lot of vets try to save the eye rather than operating. To be honest the removal of my boy's eye has made no difference, other than the fact is is no longer in pain. He hacks out on his own, competes at dressage and still jumps. Like I said previously I would suggest you get a vet out to examine the horses eye.

Good luck. Fingers crossed all is OK

Has she had the vet out, if not one is needed asap.
It's quite often recurrent and can lead to the loss of the eye.
Keep the horse out of direct sunlight until you can get the vet up to check,

the vet came out today but as im at work obviously wont know till tonight. i just wanted to know a bit more about it. TBH i didnt realise it was a serious as removal!

Moon Blindness is UVitis and is very serious unless caught in the early stages when the sight could be saved. The vet will need to put atropene in the eye and put pony in darkened stable and preferrably have a dark fly hood too so that very little light gets to the pupil.

my old horse had this.

Uveitus - very serious, my horse had it from a bang to the head, luckily I discovered he had it after a days hunting when I came home his eye was very weapy and he was unable to open it. have to get vet out ASAP.

my horse had to have something like 3 different drops 4xday for about a week or two - one of those being atropine which dilates the pupil to the max. he then was shut in his stable with all the windows covered as a dilated pupil can't react to the sun. I then turned him out after a few weeks with a fly mask i'd sewn a towel to, so he could at least see out of one eye. he was very laid back - as he always was, and didn't get bothered by it. eventually the vet gave the all clear.

from memory - it was very expensive - about £600+ for vets fees, and then the time it took was about 2 months....

Good luck and get the VET asap!
