What is the fee at moorcroft rehoming centre for ex race horses?
Big of an eager beaver and can't wait until the morning to phone them up haha!
I phoned up darley today, Jo sounds LOVELY but they don't seem to have a huge selection of horses in work..and she said it could take up to 2/3 months or even more- Not really willing to wait months for a horse which may not even be the right one! But they all sounds lovely at darley!
Anyone know much about moorcroft?

i worked there about 5 years ago :D until i had an injury that forced me to take a year out of horses :(

its a lovely yard with some very nice horses, but when i was there they used to ask mad money (upwards of £1500) for some of the nicer ones, which i thought was a lot considering the horse is only ever on loan to you.

with darley, i think you get the opportunity to purchase for a very nominal fee after a trial period.

but manager is lovely, the girls there are knowledgeable and ride well, and u can find some very nice horses - depends what you're looking to do though obviously, a lot are just hacks rather than competition horses.

but bear in mind my experiences are a few years out of date and things may have changed a bit :D

any questions pls feel free to PM me and ask :D

PS- if you do go and look can you find out if 'ellen be chic' (stable name is mouse) is still there? shes a little fleabitten grey who looks more like an arab than a tb lol - but i reschooled her and loved her to bits!! she went out on loan while i was there, but i heard on the grapevine she went back there!!

Yeahh their horses do look really lovely!
I thought that may be the case, I just find that if you're paying £1500 you may as well buy a thoroughbred instead of loaning but then it's for a good cause so it's difficult to say really!
You're so lucky to have worked there the yard looks LOVELY! I'm thinking of applying there too!
Yes darley charge £120.00 to purchase the horse, maybe my best bet is to wait a bit?
Thanks for sharing that with me :) I'm gonna call up tomorrow and see though! Thank youuuu :D x

I got my horse from darleys about 6 weeks ago! I did a lot of research before and found darleys to be the friendliest on the phone and seem to spend time matching you to the right horse, so in my opinion well worth the 3 month wait :-)

I phoned moorcroft but to be honest was a bit put off by the 'to the point' answers I got when asking questions. However, when I spoke to Jo at darleys she was lovely and gave me lots of info and always took the time to reply to emails too.

Moorcroft ask for about £1500 for a horse that can jump, although I think they spend more time re schooling them than darleys do, but I was looking for a project anyway!

Awwwww, how are you doing with himmm?/herrr?:) Yeah Jo really is lovely! It wasn't awkward at all! I can imagine how awkward it must have been if they were really 'to the point' with you :S haha!
It's just because I've been looking for a horse since February and no ex racers I really like are turning up :(

Do they ever get any quicker than 3 months?
Once Darley sell you the horse if you want to buy it, is it completely yours? So say in three years time you can't keep him or her/ change in circumstances etc, is the horse yours to sell on yourself? Or do you send him or her back to darley?
I'm not in it for profit at all, just wondering if the horse is completely yours or if the money is a donation sort of thing?
xxxx

It hasn't been easy, but my efforts are starting to pay off and he is finding his feet and settling in nicely.

It was 3 months in my situation because the day I phoned he was just being started and they take 2-3 months teaching them the basics like standing for mounting, and make sure they are safe hacking out too.

After a 3 month trial they come and visit you and you can buy the horse and it is then completely yours.

There are a few other people on here who have darley horses too so they may be able to give you more advice.

Oh and it may be worth enquiring into Heroes too, they ask for 750 donation but may be quicker and have more horses to choose from.

You have to be realistic here: the cost of schooling ANY horse is about £130 to £150 per week and ten to twelve weeks schooling would be the right amount to turn around a racehorse to a riding horse, assuming they are getting worked six days out of seven.
He will be fit when you get him and you will know of any quirks [unlike many purchases]
They are charities, but you are the main beneficiary, they really need your contribution.
Taking on an ex racehorse you are doing a "good deed"
Getting one from a re-homing centre means they will select the right horse out of all their charges, and let you have him when he is ready. Also if you take a loan, you can send him back, which is a great deal if you think about it.
In the event that you have a world beater, you can ride him without extreme financial commitment, OK you won't be able to sell him, but why would you do that anyway?
If you feel strongly about it, just buy one from Darley, this organisation is financed for you by wealthy arabs.

Completely agree with Miss L Toe. Whichever charity you decide to go with, your are the main beneficiary. You either get a 3 month trial (with Darleys) or the option to send the horse back if you are ever in the position where you can't keep it any more (Moorcroft, Heroes etc).

The main risks which come with purchasing an ex racer from a training yard have been removed for you. Darleys also gave me information about his injuries, which other people may have tried to cover up when selling.

On the other hand, these are not easy horses and you will have to put a lot of hard work in. Don't think that because they have had 3 months of reschooling that you will be out competing in the summer! It has taken me 6 weeks to even be able to tie my horse safely.

Not all TBs are difficult to be honest, you have got one with a quirk, racehorses are generally tied up for grooming and travelling, so it is not likely they will be bad, but all horses except plods are likely to have something which challenges the owner/rider.

He tied up perfectly when I went to see him, but that was in a stable. I've had issues with tying him up on the yard, which I suspect he has never done before. He is fine now though and settling in very well. All the problems I have had with him have been on the ground, as soon as I tack him up and get on he is a donkey!

I phoned up moorcroft looking for a job today and the lady sounded really niceee! She didn't sound 'to the point' maybe it's a different manager? Her name is mary?

Try the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre, TRC, thats where we got our exracer from and the loaning fee is £600 then £5pm donation to the centd. Nicky who runs it is lovely. They have a Facebook page so you can see what all the horses are getting up to.

I was completely put off by moorcroft, when I told the woman I was 6foot she said she wouldn't let me near a TB being that height (bear in mind I am only 8 stone!)
I think she would be horrified to know my boy is only 14.2hh
We eventually went to a trainer direct and got a project that way.

If you're 6foot surely a thoroughbred is the best thing to go for? haha! Aaaaaaw ponies are the BEST hahaha! Just sold my 13.2:(
How much do trainers usually sell theirs for when they've come out of racing? Is there an average price or does it vary?xxxx
