......i was out riding the other day, nice and relaxed as i was hacking along a village road, when out of nowhere came hurtling an OAP in his car. Now the road is plenty wide enough for two cars to pass by so imagine my disbelief (and my boyfriends as he was walking behind my horse) when the driver swerved his car towards me and missed my horse by about 2ft!!!!!!! Well i gave him a piece of my mind (plus hand signals!!). There was no need for it whatsoever and he didnt even slow down (but then i guess thats asking a lot when the guy obviously hates horses/riders that much!). And people complain about young drivers! Almost all young drivers that have passed me have passed wide and slow. Has anyone else experience swerving drivers???!!!

yes, a car passed me today very close at a very great speed, when it does say 'please pass wide and slow' on my tabbard!! if my pony happened to spook, as he often does, we would have been seriously injured.

I had the opposite today, a car came round the blind bend on our lane going much too fast, saw me and quite litterally stood on his brakes. Cue spraying gravel and screech of tyres which had my normally bomb proof traffic wise pony halfway into the hedge.

I was like Thanks mate as we trembled our way past. Stupid t**t

Yes had a car swerve towards us--turned round to get his number--he realised and came back to apologise. He looked ill or like he had just got very bad news.
Yes had a car slap the brakes on and skid--long time ago had my son on lead rein, he fell off onto road but OK
Yes same again new rider on pony car skidded ended up sideways across road in front of us--if it had been another vehicle there would have a smash.
Once in narrow lane saw large tractor with slurry tanker coming towards us--made sure driver had seen us then stood in field gateway, he speeded up horse tried to jump fence into field--I did report him to his employers, result he was banned from using this short cut.
I do Access for BHS and work with Cycling Touring Club to try to get more off road for Non-motorised users (NMUs) It is an uphill battle, the car is still God but maybe one day when the oil runs out..................

Was out riding this morning when I heard a sup-ed up car coming round the corner, young guy driving it saw me, slowed right down to a stop and turned the engine off! OAP I met the other day on the other hand, passed so close that my foot touched his passenger's window

Think they resent us being on the road, whereas the "youth of today" are much more tolerant. Always find that motorcyclists are pretty good as well round here.

There is a phenomenon which all riders should be aware of, which I often encountered when working on motorway hard shoulders, where a driver becomes SO focussed on tha highly visible thing that they should be avoiding, they actually become drawn to it. I can't explain why, it just happens.

So maybe the driver wasn't on a mission to kill you , or frighten you.

Hiya,
We have the 'elderly driver' thing round our way too. It's amazing how it always seems to be an older driver who just doesn't seem to see us, whereas young 'lads' who you would expect to be loonies slow right down and pass carefully! Maybe it's because their insurance is so high they are carefull not to have a crash !!!!
Also, I have really noticed how, if a driver has the whole long lane to see you coming, but still drives past all the pull in spots and doesn't seem to see you until the last minuite, they are always on their mobile phones. Hmm....!

Have you ever noticed if you are driving down through a narrow gap with cones on each side that you are continuously drawn towards the cones, whereas if you are driving normally down the same space, you would just go in a straight line!

Its not just car drivers i had a geek on a moped skid to a halt behind us at which point he decided to tell us we should'nt be on the road. It was a single track ultra quiet road on a windy day so we didnt hear him coming up behind us , i was on the verge so only one horse actually on the road. He then started telling us that the droppings on the road cause problems!
I so couldnt believe this geeks attitude , how can you reason with stupidity.

i was walking my youngster out the other day back to the yard my brother leading my good solid mare in front, we walked passed a bus that had stopped at the bus stop sign at the side of the road which my youngster found quite scary as there was only just enough room for a car to squeeze not that they should try but once woody (youngster) had realised that the bus wasn't going to bite him he was less tense some tw*t going at about 50 mph drove straight between woody and the bus causing woody to wet himself and sit down on the floor alot of nasty words came out of my mouth and hand signals flew from my brother but if that wasn't enough when he stood up another car tried to squeeze through not fast but he had seen what the other car had made my horse do i moved myself further into the middle of the road so that he would have to wait till he could over take when i let him he started shouting abuse at me i give up! if these people want a horse sitting on their bonnet they should carry on. luckly everything was ok it could have been serious!
