Hi All,

Following on from my previous post about diet for a BC, I found out from the current owner that he is currently on Chudley's working dog crunch. Looked on the website and there is NO information about what is actually in it. Does anyone know what goes into this feed or have an opinion on it??

I am keen to change him to Arden Grange if we get him combined with a bit of raw. Does this sound ok and what are the best raw bones to feed? I know about chicken wings but can they have pretty much any raw bones? People seem to steer clear of beef bones - is there a reason for this?

Sorry for all the questions but I take my 'pet' responsibilities very seriously and want to do the best by him - subject to OH approval on getting him - cooking him lots of steak at the moment

Large glass of red if you get this far and thanks in advance.

Any bones are great and i think the only reason i steer away from beef is the bones are HUGE and expensive.

Make sure you feed the raw and biscuits separately.

Chicken is great, its cheap and you get a lot of food from one bird.

Make sure you search out the sell off section in your supermarket and look there for any bits of meat on sale.

I'm not saying don't do it but when i first started raw with my first dog i did it with some dog food some Raw and i found it really hard to balance out what he was getting. So thats something for you to keep an eye on.
Remember more bone puts weight on and more meat can help take weight down.

Good luck.

Great thanks for that - I was thinking of feeding complete food in the am and raw pm and reducing the quantity of complete food to take account of the raw.

Can you feed raw, whole fish too? Or are there problems with fish bones anything else?

Yeah thats sounds like a good feeding plan!

Yeah i feed fish i generally don't feed a whole fish because its expensive but i so feed like a bones in fillet of fish if i find it in the sell of section.

Crack an egg over his food once or so a week to = extra shiny coat!

I tend to avoid beef bones as they can be very hard, I feed mainly chicken and lamb ribs, the lamb ribs I buy the breast of lamb which is all the ribs which fade to cartilage and some meat on the end so for one it would be about 4 meals. I also feed pigs trotters, rabbit, and deer ribs, but again the big red deer have hard bones and deer leg bones are extremely hard.

Fish is fine and the eyeballs believe it or not are one of the best bits for vitamins and minerals!! I feed salmon heads and bits of boned out fish from the fishmonger. My current dogs are not so keen on fish, I also buy whitebait when it's on offer and mix it with the tinned pilchards in tomato sauce with some liquidised veg and cold pressed oil.

Bones are important as they have most of the vitamins and minerals for the diet in the marrow so missing them out when feeding totally raw can lead to imbalances.

Likewise offal, liver is important, mine won't touch kidneys, I also feed lambs hearts and green tripe which is the only thing I buy from the pet shop, I feed it frozen as I can't stand the smell, I know hard to believe!

I think we should have a comparison on here with everyone posting the labels on their current feed and lets see what they do and don't tell you!!!!

We tried Chudleys Working Dog and didn't like it at all, sounds stupid but it even looked bland. The dogs seemed to get bored on it. It's just a round biscuit...

We have ours on Skinners Muesli Mix for working dogs which is more varied. I would LOVE to get mine on a raw diet, it's meant to be so much better for them. The gamekeepers are kind enough to give us deer heads, legs and offal every now and then, which they LOVE!
