Just wondering, when I look at results for eventing it is split into different lettered sections. I don't really understand what the sections are? Are they separated for a reason or is it just some people are in section F and some H etc?
When it comes to results, are you only compared to people in your section or is it overall? So if you were at a regional final and it was in 2 sections, would the top 20% from each section qualify? Or just the top 20% overall?
 
They get split into sections when there are lots of entries, I don't think there's any rhyme or reason as to who is in which section, although I'm sure the entries secretary would try to take things like requests for early/late starts into account when splitting them.
You're only competing against people in your own section, think of each one as a separate competition.
 
Above poster has explained it really well but basically if you enter a class say the BE100, the entries are then split into sections. They are all run exactly the same with the only difference being each section is normally judged by a different dressage judge (purely so the day runs quicker), however that whole section will be judged by the same person making it fair.

Looking back at results can be quite interesting as the top scores between sections can vary a lot depending on how the dressage judge has marked their section.

Normally there are around 30-40 per section in the lower BE levels however in regionals or large classes there can be double that and more.

The separation into sections is random *i believe or atleast at lower levels it seems to be* but takes into account riders with multiple horses being in different sections, timings, riders with close relationship to a judge etc. It’s luck of the draw!
 
And prizes are awarded to different sections ... so it may end up that one section will have better prizes just because that section has been sponsored by a more generous sponsor.
