More bitting - general questions

General bitting queries:
1) what is the difference between a copper roller and a cherry roller? Is one the one where the mouthpiece has "vertical" strips of copper along the "horizontal" bar of the mouthpiece? And one where there are copper rings around the mouthpiece? Or have I got it totally wrong, and if so what ARE those mouthpieces called??
2) what is the purpose of having "ridges" on one side of the mouthpiece (on the horses I've ridden, in conjunction with the copper rings)?
3) does anyone know a good website that tells you the names of the different bits and about their actions?

Copper roller- has built in swivelly bits which are in line with the rest of the mouthpiece
Cherry roller- all the same metal, these are bigger rolls, the bit is a lot more chunky.

The vertical fixed strips that you see on Mylers do nothing bar 'warm' the bit, apparently!

Pull Tam's bit box out, you'll find everything in there, we've def got a D ring copper roller and a loose ring cherry roller.

The rings on Bruno's bit are just for a bit more play and to prevent the horse grabbing hold of the bit. The ridges are to put a bit of pressure on the tonuge. That snaffle is a bit stronger than your average snaffle basically. That bit is nice because you can have it ridge side to or away from the tongue, loads of horses go well in it (shame it isnt dressage legal!)

So what would Bruno's mouthpiece be called? And what would Odin's jumping bit (same mouthpiece as Bruno's) be called, cheeks and all?
I've never understood bitting, thought I'd better brush up my skills seeing as I'll be working in a tack shop!
I think I've got the copper roller (used to SJ last share horse in one, I remember she was always softer in the mouth in it than her French link we used for dressage). Still confused on the cherry roller - does it have to be SS or can it be the copper ones?
Don't get me started on Mylers, "regular" bits are enough for now!
Are the explanations on this site fairly accurate http://www.shop4bits.com/item--Cherry-Roller--Cherry-Roller.html (I know there isn't really any research into the actions of bits, but I know how some websites spout some right rubbish and I don't want to be reading the "wrong" things!)?

Theyre called 'ribs and roller' or scrub-board bits. Odin's is just a short american gag version, I used to xc Bos in that bit before he got really strong!

Cherry rollers can be made of any metal. I'm not a great fan tbh, theyre quite bulky and I've not found a horse they work well on yet....

I start on Saturday! All I really know about are supplements because I used to feed my horse too many! The main things like bits and veterinary stuff and the VITAL piece of knowledge that is how to make a good cuppa are missing!!

Actually having had a good lesson on Bruno today and been told I actually rode him straight so now I can start thinking about bending him (

) I'm a bit more motivated to learn about what his bit is and why he has it!
