I think my little spaniel has done her cruciate ligament. Waiting to go down the vets.
Was perfectly fine on our walk then she sat down and got up holding her leg high up in the air. Cant see any problems with her foot, and having seen dogs with the ligament gone before Im very afraid. Shes hiding in her bed now which is not like her in the mornings.
Whats the prognosis if he has done this ?A neighbour had his dog put down recently when he did his but dog was old and very fat and arthritic.
Cant believe this has happened after losing my old Badger dog.

I have one Springer currently waiting on a TPLO (corrective surgery for cruciate rupture) and his brother had the same operation 3 years ago. It's a significant procedure but from my own experience and that of friends, it is very successful although the first 6 weeks post OP are stressful!
If you have more questions I can try to answer them.

I have been through this op twice with my dogue de Bordeaux mastiff, years ago..at age one she slipped,on tiles, chasing a cat and snapped her cruciate...the op went well, and we had two reasonable years. At age three the same ligament went again. We reoperated, but the dog didn’t survive the post op recovery( embolism) and passed away the day after her surgery.
.. the fact she was a mastiff went against her.
You have a spaniel..a much lighter breed so that should be a much better prognosis..
after the surgery you have to keep the dog quiet,on lead exercise.Around six weeks you should be able to return to normality if the op is successful.
In the case of a tear rather than complete snapping of the ligament, the dog can sometimes avoid an op.Rest and antiinflammatories can sometimes be enough to allow the tear to mend.
I hope the latter is your scenario..the op is expensive and not always successful..but from your description you may just have a tear...the vet will be the one to tell you ,but don’t leave things too late for the tear to worsen. good luck.
