Apologies that this isnt completely horse-related; have posted it in the Dogs section, but will get more views here! I have been planning to get a longhaired dachshund puppy in the spring. however, not wanting to rush into anything, I've been considering lots of breeds to see what will suit me most! Daxis are gorgeous, but having spoken to a fair few knowledgeable people now, I'm a little worried about the various health problems they can suffer. The other breed I am growing to really love is the beagle! Now my pup - whatever I get - will be living with two black labs, a part-time border terrier, and will have to make friends with a 6 month old GSD pup also. I would like to be able to take it riding with me, so it will need to be relatively horse friendly (and i have to say, the thought of a tiny dachshund running in and out of ellie's legs fills me with dread!) we also live on a farm, so it wont be a 'town dog'. I would also like it to be a small dog, as I want to be able to give it nice cuddles! Our black lab likes to jump up on your lap - somehow, she hasnt figured out the fact that she isnt jack-russell size.....
My other options - breeds I have always liked - are a working cocker spaniel, or a miniature bull terrier. any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Beagles are lovely but they will disappear off hunting for hours! We used to have one and when we took her for walks she was sometimes gone for an hour or so and you could hear her putting up deer etc. Maybe not a good idea if you want to take it riding!

hmmm....I wouldnt get a border as my OH has one - he's lovely, but I find terriers so arrogant! we clash big time! hence why I thought the beagle option would be better...a 'big little' dog, so to speak. having said that, Cairns are seriously cute!

LOL!!!!!

I dont think so! My OH's brother has a lovely English pointer - wonderful personality, but he's a regular houdini, and SO headstrong! He pulled my OH's dad over, snapped his lead and ran away...was gone for 3 days, eventually found wrapped around a maize stalk by the end of his lead, about 5 miles from home! mad dog!

Beagles are lovely but they do go off, we had one when I was a kid and it used to start crying and then head down and off, for days! It taught our spaniel to do the same thing.

Why not get a rescue pup - My girly Betty is a 3 year old border x staffy (possibly), she is an absolute angel. Th eonly downside is that when tyou go to the rescue home you will be haunted by all the sad eyes imploring you to take them home.......
