After two vet visits this week for my horse and my best friend's i thought things would settle down.....wrong!!
Got a call about 5pm yesterday to say that they had escaped from their field and had been brought up to the yard. I have a four acre field which is about half a mile from the stables in the middle of a country park and the two of them live out 24/7. Anyway on inspection of the fence there was about 16 feet of it down (it is post and rail) with three of the big uprights completely snapped, god knows what happened. Horses were fine and the staff managed to catch them but have no idea what caused it. It certainly has been a week i would rather forget!!!

Yeah i posted yesterday under "Update". She has a very low red blood cell count, so not enough oxygen getting to brain which would explain her collapsing. She is going on a three month course of medicine and then we will blood test again.

This is the only thing I don't like about post and rail - we have to replace rails often and we use big rails but if they really want to crash through them, they certainly can! We are now rethinking our future fencing strategies and have opted for the vinyl fencing now. Just in the process of fencing two new pasture fields and they are going to be vinyl.

Horses! Blooming nightmare some times.

Apart from using heavier duty rails than is normally used and pre-coating them before erecting them we also staple equifencing (smaller holes than sheep fencing) to the post and rail fencing once it has been erected. This reduced the chances of them breaking the posts and rails if they kick out at them. We also concrete in every third post.

Tia, totally agree with you re: post and rail.
at my last place, local cattle farmer became a good mate. i had him up to talk about fencing, the first thing he said was "horses are too strong for p&r fencing." absolutely true. now it's elec tape, or telegraph pole fencing, for mine. elec's the best, it's the only thing they truly respect imho.
