horse had severe laminitus 2 years ago , but i want more energy without fizz, he gets hi-fi lite with top spec and same amount of oats as top spec, dilema is do i up the oats or try a different feed, he is a very good doer so energy only needed any ideas thanks

Basically if you feed more energy than the horse needs for day to day living then it will put on weight. There is no such thing as an energy that will give oomph but not weight gain. I would never feed cereals to a laminitic, far too risky to feed starchy feeds.

Starch releases the energy quicker following digestion compared to fibre, hence why cereals can cause fizziness or more oomph in some horses. But with a laminitic you need to keep starch and sugar in the diet to a minimum. Alfalfa or unmollassed sugar beet would provide extra slow release energy that is safer for a laminitic than cereal based feeds. However, if the extra energy provided in the diet is not used fo exercise the horse will gain weight.
