I wonder if anyone can recommend any foods that could spice my horse up a bit without being to high in protein? He was quite angular when i brought him and after trying several mixes finally found that baileys top line mix was perfect and his put on loads of top line, i then added alfa a sugar beet and fed haylage and he responded well in terms of energy , he felt like he had plenty in the tank , however the farrier said he was getting to much protein and it was coming out in the condition of his feet, i changed him to 75% haylage 25% hay took the alfa a away for fibregy but kept mix at same level, ( he also gets some high fibre nuggets in his decatlon ball and small amount of ultra grass ) however now he seems a bit flatter and not as forward and energised, not sure what to add or change to keep balance, if i feed some oats on top would that ruin balance of mix?? any ideas helpful before i go to feed merchants and waste loads of money!! his 6 yr old 17hh kwpn middleweight in work 5-6 times a week made up of 3-4 hour long schooling sessions and 2 hacks usually between 1 - 2 hrs. will drop weight quite easily

i find allen and pages weight gain mix fed in a small quantity keeps my warmblood nicely in condition without having to feed too much. at 17 3 I only give him a scoop of the mix and a scoop of barley rings and plenty of hay, he does do a lot of work too. it's full of oats and barley. he likes it anyway don't know if its much help

I just re - read this and realised you were actually asking about energy.

I feed both my warmbloods on Bailey's lo-cal, oats and alfafa and it does them fine but each horse is different. There's no harm in adding oats but you could try barley if trying to keep weight on him ov er the winter.

I have swapped to chestnut horsefeeds and within 2 months they are both looking great ,they are shining, have put on muscle and have much more energy .I am using the alfa plus it has alot of oil and fibre

hi already took sugar beet out, he was getting baileys top line mix, alfa a and sugar beet with his high fibre nuggets in his treat ball and haylage now he gets baileys top line mix, fibergy , ready grass and his high fibre nuggets treat ball and have swapped some of his haylage portion for hay, he gets time out in field as often as possible when weather allows, ( if bad weather he just waits by gate , think he likes the meals on wheels food delivery service in his stable! )didnt know if possibly a competition mix would be better for energy now conditition is built and stable??

What problem does the farrier think is being reflected in his feet? Normally a good level of protein actually improves the condition of the feet?
