The lungs couldn’t have been caused by the feed. And the ulcers probably caused by his hocks but how much of it was exacerbated by the feed? It’s odd as he has been on that feed for years. But the addition of the feed and the symptoms coming back followed by going again quickly can only point to that not helping the issue at best. I spoke to vet and he agrees the timing is too “right” for it to be the feed causing an issue. He said ulcers could come back in as short as a week but if he has gone back to normal he is probably ok. He suggested emailing the feed company but I’m not sure it’s worth it. He is back on the fast fiber and small amounts of soothe and gain and I’ll just stick with that.

Sorry K I've not kept up with the food issue, which feed was it that caused problems?

I'm glad he's feeling a lot better.

Spillers conditioning fiber.

I wonder if it's the short cut, the alfalfa, the straw or the rapeseed oil causing the problems? I'm glad you worked it out, anyway. :)

No idea. Like I say he had been on it for a couple of years. Then as he got poorly and was dropping weight I was feeding more and more of it. Changed when I was trying to get abx in to him. Put him back on it as “easier” for yo to feed if I had to go to hospital. A week later (despite going half and half for 4 days) he was very unhappy again. Had a light bulb moment early am when I couldn’t sleep with worry. 24hrs off it and a much happier horse.

On one of the scopes my mare had, she had some 'scratch' marks on the site of a previously healed ulcer. I was feeding chaff that had stalky alfalfa bits in it, which i can only assume caused them. The vet said they would start to re-ulcerate without continuing treatment (she still had other ulcers so it didn't make any difference). Sounds like you caught yours just in time! I think it probably takes a while for the stomach lining to totally heal even once the ulcers have gone. She's had that same chaff again recently having been clear of ulcers for a longer time with no problem.

This is heartwarming to see, I’m currently on month 6 of an horrendous time with my lovely horse, lameness, ulcers and sub clinical inflammation due to not being in full work and having steriods for the ulcers.

My mare shouted at me in October and I’m still not healed after numerous broken bones, although had my collar bone re-broke & plated 10 days ago and feels like it may eventually heal now. ??

I can’t wait to be where you were sat today on my girl with her ears pricked forward, just hoping it won’t be long.

Watching your video gives me inspiration, well done you ??

Thankfully he never actually hurt me short of a bit of concussion. But for him to dump me 3 times was not right. It took a while of finding and issue, finding another and another. And a bit of vets head scratching. I actually shelved all hope to ride again. I was just hoping I would have a horse at the end of it. I walked him in hand for 5 weeks but yesterday he just seemed ready for being ridden. Happy hacking will do!
