In a national ride last weekend in Al Wathba UAE a British rider competed who lives out there and her photo was published by the ride website. The photo shows her riding a horse with what appears to be a chain around its nose accompanied by a severe bit. The photo has been widely shared around the world on social media and has received many comments. The ride website has since withdrawn the photo.

It always seems be the UAE. You would think they'd be embarrassed about the reputation the country is getting.

This is sadly nothing new, mild in fact, in UAE endurance terms. It is pretty horrifying that a UK rider feels this is ok though. Nevertheless, UAE money is involved in endurance in this country and in this faction of the sport, abuse is simply a technique used to win lovely, expensive prizes. Most UK endurance riders want nothing to do with this but the governing body -EGB, are only too happy to play sport with the UAE. It's pretty distasteful, however, there are good people in the UAE and one Sheikh in particular is doing much to change the sport for the better. That is a good thing. The race featured in the images is a travesty of the horse and human 'partnership', but one which the FEI seem to lack the balls to deal with.

It was an upside down Pelham. And "they" don't care what other people think and those that keep taking their money are the ones who would rather not think.

Not our sport.

It's is actually a long shanked curb, with a chain flash - used with rainbow reins to add insult to injury

Is this much of a surprise? Does FEI endurance actually have any rules regarding bitting? And was this an FEI ride? The UAE couldnt care, they just want to win races but to be honest the FEI arent strict enough so I think we let them off with these things. I see a Dubai TV truck in the background, drives me crazy in restaurants in Dubai as they show races live on huge screens and (non-horsey) tourists think its amazing. I had to leave the Cheesecake Factory last time I was there as it makes for such awful viewing!

Umm... this is actually a British rider :/

Could anyone advise which British rider, the rest is not surprising but most of EGB have been aghast at funding of rides over here coming from over there because of the practices. Is this some if you can't beat them join them approach?
