Thanks guysthat means a lot to me! JFTD - you're also the one who's inspired me to try grids
hopefully now he's more relaxed, I won't get a repeat of last time I tried...gallop with all the poles on the floor, oops!
Grids are great for teaching them to use themselves properly - just keep them low and gradually increase their complexity. Someone in CR said the other week something along the lines of:
"A good grid can be near impossible to ride unless you get it right despite being tiny, or set the horse up so well for a big fence that it will leave you feeling like you could jump the moon"
i.e. that you can teach so much over tiny fences (bounces, very complex etc for horse and rider) or it can make it really simple so it sets them up perfectly for a final big fence. I like that idea.
