More PG, follicle and ovulation qu's...

Can I just say firstly that 16 years ago this seemed much easier!!!! Mare in season, covered twice, bingo!

Not so this time!

Right, so... Mare not coming into season was jabbed blind by the stud, came in season, covered twice - didn't get anywhere. Scanned at 17 days from first covering, vet 95% certain there was nothing but scanned again 3 days later to make sure.

At this point she had plenty of "activity" and a 25mm follicle and vet thought a few days and she's come back into season. Behaviour changed a bit but not obviously in season like after the jab so we've got nowhere again - 2nd scan was 19 July.

Took her back to the vet yesterday for our last ditch attempt this year to see what was going on. Well the follicle from the left ovary has gone, corpus luteum in evidence, another 25mm follicle on the right ovary. Vet says all looks perfect, has jabbed her and says she should come in season in 3-4 days.

Is that a decent size follicle to inject on and do the timescales sound right for that to mature and ovulate? Planning on covering days 2 and 4 or 3 and 5.

Also if PG increases twinning chances, and TB's more likely to twin than others, what about 3/4TB's - still as bad? Though no other larger follicles so I guess we should be OK for that...

On average it takes 9.5 days for a mare to ovulate when she has a follicle which is less that 3 cm in diameter at the time
of administration of the prostaglandin. (H. Lindenburg et. al., 2002) So, it may take her a little longer to ovulate than you might expect, although she will obviously begin showing in season fairly quickly if the PG actually destroys the CL.

What's been going on with the uterine edema? It's pretty important that this is being taken into account too, as well as the tone of the uterus, and cervical status.

Double ovulations are more likely in Warmbloods than TB's, but it varies from mare to mare. Unless you're seeing two follicles maturing on ultrasounds, then you've got pretty much zero chance of a twin ovulation.

Not mentioned... vet said mainly that everything looks about perfect, can't see any problems, showed us the corpus luteum and thinks the timing is good.

So, from reading your reply, if she was scanned Tuesday 7th and say comes into season 3-4 days later based on the last one so say Saturday, we need to try to cover her a bit later if we want to keep the little swimmers alice long enough to do the business? She did stay in season quite some time last time but only covered days 1 and 3 as she tore slightly.

So if she is covered day 4 of being in season, thats 8 days after scanning and the jab, we might get her, but day 5 or 6 may be better?

Will go up and have a good chat with stallion owner on Saturday. She's a lot less "scientific" and my book learnin' isn't giving this much info - the books assume everything straight forward and serene, no blood and awkwardness included!

If I am doing an inhand mating I usually cover on day 3 and day 5 of the season, that way you will certainly have viable semen sat in there covering day 3 through to day 6 inclusive (and possibly will cover day 7 too if she is a contrary mary type!).
 
My T/B mare has twinnned twice now but my warmbloods never have so far

"Tripling the chance of double ovulation" sounds like a really big increase - like it's BOUND to happen. Whereas, in fact the chance of twins at 30 days without PG is about 1% and with PG is about 3%. It's not worth mentioning really

Also - there's a lot of conflicting evidence about whether or not it does have any effect.
