Hi guys,

Hope you are well and enjoying this glorious weather!

Prince is in fine form and enjoyed being given a nice bath by my daughter recently!

We have decided to retire him now after some X-rays revealed mild arthritis and potentially kissing spines (was just a mobile X-ray so weaker strength than usual - but enough to convince me that he now needs to live out his days without weight on his back. Vet is happy that he is very comfortable when not ridden so he will have regular physio, in hand walks and is going barefoot!

His horn had always been very slow to grow and is quick to crumble - especially when nails are driven in. So far he is doing extremely well barefoot and has a good thick sole according to the X-rays.

I have some scoot boots for him to wear when we go out walking in hand in the forest and this is what he seems to love the most! He splashes away in the river and even has a good sniff!

So all is well and I will continue to post about our in hand adventures!!

Keira and Prince x

Ahh thank you so much everyone for your lovely kind comments. He really is one in a million and I’m so lucky to be able to give him a lovely well deserved retirement.

I love sharing everything with you all, thank you for always being interested and so supportive.

did you ever have a look at the wehorse.com website? they have great inhand training stuff that could be interesting to do with him, you could learn a lot of dressage inland and it would be good for his back at the same time. also some of the inhand trek stuff looks fun. I know trek ireland have a challenge going where you have four tasks to try (like walking over a tarp, or past flags) and you can send in photos of you doing them. I rehab a lot fo horses, so it's amazing the amount of in-hand stuff that is around! might be worth giving online showing a go as well as he's so pretty!

Keira, my admiration for you just overflows. What you have given to this lovely boy is amazing.

I would definitely recommend having a look at inhand work, Le Trec in hand competitions in the UK are amazing fun, very little pressure and everyone is there to have fun and support each other.

We are very fortunate over here, as we have a short trailer ride to a purpose built, free Le Trec course in a nearby Forest, lots of obstacles and you can download a score sheet online and score yourself for fun, if you want to. Every obstacle has a description of how to do it on a post next to the obstacle. I can highly recommend Le Trec and there aren’t generally any obstacles that are difficult for retired horses.

Thank you so much ?

This sounds great! I had no idea there was a place for just in hand fun - I’m sure this is something he will really enjoy as his ground manners are wonderful and he loves doing new things. Thank you very much ??
