More problems with my filly.....

I'm beginning to lose the will to live with this poor filly!

I had the vet out with regards her teeth, who said that she is erupting molars and to steer away from hay as she is struggling with the chewing.

I have moved her and my old girl to a rested field with a decent covering of grass (old girl thrilled!) and they are having a bucket at night.

All good, but then she started losing her coat....in clumps....with bald flaky skin underneath it.
It's definitely not ringworm, and the lice she had are long gone.

I started her on Micronised Linseed and flax oil (the oil you only give 3 to 4 times a week) in with her Calm & Condition but this hasn't done a great deal, although her coat does look stronger and less staring.
She is dreadfully itchy, which isn't surprise given how her skin is lifting, and will spend quite a lot of time scratching herself and rolling, she also always rolls after every meal although the vet doesn't think it is anything to worry about, and according to her breeders she has always done it.

Yesterday I noticed that the skin on her withers is very flaky and that she is reacting to any brushes as if they are electric shocking her, or hurting her skin, and today when I took her rug off her withers are slightly swollen and very warm.

Her worm count has come back as 1800 strongyle eggs pg even though she has been 5 Day Guarded and had an Equitape, and so as advised by Westgate Labs she is having a full bottle (225ml) of Panacur Guard over the 5 days, so 45ml a day.

She has lost weight and condition in the last few days too, so is (if I'm generous) about a 1.5 on the 1-5 condition score scale.

Vet will be back out tomorrow to blood test/investigate/skin scrape/provide tissues whilst I have a mini breakdown, but I wondered if anyone had any insight as to what on earth I am dealing with?!

Sorry - I hope you can understand this, I'm rambling!

Thanks in advance

Mel

Has she had a rug on full time with no grooming over winter - might account for the clumpy hair loss and flaky skin, but not the sensitivity.
Sorry but have no experience of the other symptoms.
Good luck with her, let us know how she gets on.

Thanks Digger, she was unrugged and had horrid rainscald when I got her in Dec. She then had lice which I treated with Coopers Spot on.
She is rugged, but I'm fussy about rugs and change/take off and check under every day.
Her main hair loss is behind her ears, under her fetlock, under her jaw and then along her spine from withers to loins.

Foxy1, she is on pasture (rested and grazed by sheep) 24/7 and has C&C, Micronised Linseed, Mare,Foal and Old Supplement (Equimins) Flax oil and a small handful of Top Spec Top Chop Lite. My old Mare has L-Mix and the Top Chop Lite and Madam tends to lick her bucket out (they swap :/ )

I would say she is itchy due to the rain scald and lice her skin is just getting over it, having a rug on all the time is also not helping, the rug could also be the cause of the sore withers if the hair is coming out, you could try sewing some sort of padding to the wither area,If she were mine I would clip her then bath her in a medicated shampoo but as she is living out its not really possible.

Failing that brewers yeast is good for skin and the flax oil your feeding is good although it is the same as linseed so only need to feed one or the other.

Do you not have a friend that has a yard with hot water and electric? I would be inclined to have a trip there clip her and give her a good wash.

When did you use the Coopers? One of mine reacted to it across the withers, up the mane, under neck and down spine. This is because this is where it spreads to first and will be most concentrated?? Just a thought? She was worse because she was rugged as well.
