I'm really after someone to give me a kick up the backside and tell me to think rationally and not with my emotions....

Would anyone pay more than meat money for a physically fit, but high-mileage 20-yr old? His vetting says he has no arthritis, but his slightly stiff back tells me its only a matter of time.....

He will go to a good home, so its not like I'm 'saving' him from a miserable end, but I am kind of gut-wrenched at the thought of not taking him home with me.....

xxQxx

He will be ridden for as long as he is comfortable.....but he is in retirement, so no competitions, just a light hack

how big? what do you want him for etc? i always get upset when older ponies come on the market.
just because something is a little older doesnt mean its not worth a fair amount of money.

If you like the horse buy him. If he's going for just over meat money then he's not going to be very expensive. If he has no signs of arthritis then he could go on happily for many more years to come. I would look at his management where he is to determine whether the stiffness in the back is something that could be better managed by you.

He is such a lovely creature, I'm very fond of him. Even if he is only ridden for a couple of months, I would be honoured to have him as part of my family. I guess I'm just after what one considers to be a realistic limit to shell out initially.

He comes naked....and due to his sensitive back, will need extra careful saddle fitting, and yes, potentially some long term treatment to protect his back. He has also been stabled pretty much 24/7, although I know he has enjoyed it when he's been turned out.....
Anyway, thank you for reading.....:)

Follow your gut instinct & get him I say! You obviously care for him a lot & will kick yourself if you don't with all the "what ifs?"

If you get him his back would probably improve with being turned out, although obviously physio and a good saddle also needed.
Poor boy in all the time:confused:

Yes, if you like him enough i suppose. But what i think about older horses, is that YOUR doing the owner a FAVOUR. Remember a good, possible made to measure saddle, plus other tack, plus extra veteran medication/supplements will cost much more than the horse himself, who, not being mean, does not have much potential to most people.
I would not offer much more than meat money, but guarantee to the owner that he will never be sold etc, and guarantee him a good retirement. Hopefully, if they are decent people, they will accept. I know you said he will be going to a good home anyway etc, but he is only going to get older, and people will be less and less inclined to buy him, they may have to wait a long time to find that "perfect owner".

Go for it! I have a 21 year old TB who does have arthritis! He is fabulous. He gets ridden about 3 times a week - light hacking or gentle schooling and never on consecutive days. I love older horses - they tend to have such character and know every trick in the book! Get him, enjoy him and keep us updated!

an animal or anything for that matter is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for the object.I wouldnt use the term "meat money" in discussion with the buyer tho (unless thats their terminology!)

A younger horse can be more trouble and cost more in vets bills than a golden oldie!!
