My 4yo has been long overdue a trip to the beach- I had been holding off until we were settled under saddle.. And today was the day! :D He was a dude. We schooled a little- first time on sand in an open space with seaweed as markers, and he was nicely settled. Then we had a plodge in the rock pools (no waves!) to start off before braving the breaking surf. My welsh idiot Ru is actually wonderful at the beach- he's an old pro, and was on nursemaid duties, but apart from taking a lead twice- and kindly allowing Ru to go on the side of the breaking waves so that the sea monsters ate him first- Gunner was really brave! His ears were all over the place for the first five minutes while he figured the surface out but after that he was chilled right out.

So anyway- on the way back down the beach we had a lovely long canter, I asked him to stretch out for the first time, and he motored on a bit but didn't really get the hang of gallop... So we had a breather and once he'd had another plodge, went halfway back up the beach and started out in canter, I pushed him on and... I have a rolls royce!! He just lengthens beautifully- to one of those effortless, ground covering gallops. After almost ten years of rarely galloping anything bigger than 15hh, who's legs go hell for leather like little pistons, the 16.1 (approx...!) baby horse is smoothness itself! And he pulled straight up with no grumbles when asked... So in short, a lovely morning well spent enjoying ourselves!! :D :D :D :D :D

Compulsory pics... And godawful position alert... :( anyone with ideas on getting myself to actually keep my chin up and shoulders back??!

Well done you!! This is definitely on my list of things to do before...

First I need the right horse and then I need my brave pants!

*sigh* would love to take my horse to the beach but sadly being as land locked as it is possible to be in the UK it is unlikely to happen.

Feel free to pop and see us when you're up ;)

I have to box there so try to go about once a month or so, but there are a fair few livery yards near there and a few bods ride on it... There were two coloured cobs on there with us this morning :)

He was much better behaved than my youngster! We were talking about it to tonight and there was one moment when all 3 babies legged it up the beach and crashed into each other..leaving the 2 schoolmasters in the sea! shingle we could finally manage, the large kites flying could be passed and we could all get in the sea

Until the waves broke and we had white foam coming in. Cue exit at quick speed, oh and let's not forget the unforeseen horror of the unexpected tiny stream that appeared on the way back!

Lol Luci! I did remove everything from pockets in case of emergency exit into sea! he's generally chilled but has recently been trying out handstands for style ;) he stuck his nose between his knees once and was growled at- ten decided that on and nice mummy was much better than handstand and nasty mummy ;)

Lovely photos, nice looking horse too.

Re: ideas for your chin up. Think about stretching your pony tail down your back and pointing your belly button at the sky. Those words worked for me and have broken a bad habit of head burying. :)
