My 4yo has been long overdue a trip to the beach- I had been holding off until we were settled under saddle.. And today was the day!
He was a dude. We schooled a little- first time on sand in an open space with seaweed as markers, and he was nicely settled. Then we had a plodge in the rock pools (no waves!) to start off before braving the breaking surf. My welsh idiot Ru is actually wonderful at the beach- he's an old pro, and was on nursemaid duties, but apart from taking a lead twice- and kindly allowing Ru to go on the side of the breaking waves so that the sea monsters ate him first- Gunner was really brave! His ears were all over the place for the first five minutes while he figured the surface out but after that he was chilled right out.
So anyway- on the way back down the beach we had a lovely long canter, I asked him to stretch out for the first time, and he motored on a bit but didn't really get the hang of gallop... So we had a breather and once he'd had another plodge, went halfway back up the beach and started out in canter, I pushed him on and... I have a rolls royce!! He just lengthens beautifully- to one of those effortless, ground covering gallops. After almost ten years of rarely galloping anything bigger than 15hh, who's legs go hell for leather like little pistons, the 16.1 (approx...!) baby horse is smoothness itself! And he pulled straight up with no grumbles when asked... So in short, a lovely morning well spent enjoying ourselves!!
Compulsory pics... And godawful position alert...
anyone with ideas on getting myself to actually keep my chin up and shoulders back??!
