Mosquitos and how to stop them proliferating?

Has been raining rather alot lately and there are pools of water gathering at the back of stables not getting the chance to dry out as they're in the shade. I'm worried about mosquitos breeding there and the possible nasties they could bring. Any good ideas for stuff I can chuck on the puddles to kill mozzies? As this is my own initiative would like a cost-effective solution please (preferably something I can get at local 3rd world supermarket). Was thinking perhaps bleach, and I heard on radio that oil catches the feckers and prevents them laying eggs/eggs hatching, something like that...
Anyone less fuzzy on the details?

bleach and other poisons you can get your hands on then you can throw naughty kiddies in aswell

Aha! A cunning plan!!! Don't REALLY want to use poison though as horses are in there at night...

You'd think so, wouldn't you? In fact, simple guttering would improve the situation no end, but the feckwits in charge would rather build an enclosure for the ostriches than sort out the pens... don't get me started!

Umm would salt work? Or do you get mosquitoes at sea? Might be a dumb idea, not really sure... but at least it wouldn't poison anyone....

I spray PF with OFF! every day too!

I spray mine with Deep Woods Off! in the Summer too.

We're not supposed to but I don't care; I use it on myself and I'd rather the horses have side-effects from the Off! than them catch WNV.

Ah, fortunately no WNV round these parts, BUT EIA and encefalomielitis (sp?) scare the bejeezus out of me! Shame nobody else seems to share my concerns
