Moss everywhere

The land we use for our horses is currently split in two, each section just over two acres in size. One half is being used for everyone at the moment and the other half is resting.
The plan is to put a track on the half they're on currently over the summer for the good doers and use the half currently being rested for the poorer doers.
However, the resting half - whilst it looks lovely and green from a distance - is mostly moss!

Questions: why is one half entirely moss-free and the other completely covered in it?

How can the moss be got rid of please, and what can we do to make sure it doesn't come back? (Although we didn't have this issue last year).

Preferably without needing tractor/machinery as we don't have ready access to anything like that.

Thank you.

Can be to do with how much light that bit of land is getting, and drainage. Moss prefers a bit damp and won't like full sun.
The best solution to get rid of it I have found is....horses!
Mine love eating it just as much as grass. I use them to clear the moss in the front lawn.
If you didn't have this issue last year, I'd be inclined to graze it as normal (the good doers) as just watch it for another year.
You'll see the moss at the moment because the grass isn't coming up yet.

We have moss in parts of the garden and the fields, typically where there is little sunlight and a lot of tree cover, so the damp holds. But although it looks at its worse now, as soon as the grass starts to grow the moss then disappears as the grass takes over.

I try not too worry about it........
