We don't usually take donkeys since they have their own sanctuary nearby but it's full and his companion died so he was lonely.

He has a HUGE crest/lump along his neck that hangs to the side, you can see on the photos. The vet says it's a fatty tumour so he'll get an operation to remove that.
He should feel so much better then, it is so heavy
But has anyone had any experience with anything like this? He's such a friendly chap I just hope it will be quite a simple "chop it off" operation although I'd imagine it will leave quite a big scar? :(

He's made great friends with Kim, and Sililia the mule :D

Anyway, meet Gnash! (he likes to nibble :D)

I worked at a sanctuary which had a lot of donkeys, and many of the older ones had collapsed crests like this. Didn't do them any harm, but this one is extreme, and I would worry about skin infections under it. I suggest you contact the Donkey Sanctuary or Redwings for advice.

Ah ok didn't know that!

We're a rescue centre too, I'm just a volunteer though, I was just wondering if anyone has a donkey who's had to have it removed.

I'm pretty sure all advice we've had is to take it off though.

I was going to say our old donkey had something similar and as nikkiportia said i think it's just a collapsed crest as opposed to a tumour. I think ours also got arthritis in his neck towardas the end. When he was younger though his crest could get pretty solid so we did have to watch his grass intake!

Is your vet a donkey expert? I would maybe contact the donkey sanctuary or something similar and ask their advice. Personally if the donkey is quite elderly then i wouldn't be wanting to remove it unless it was causing problems

Yeah it might well be, I wasn't there when the vet saw him and I'm just going off what I was told today, so vet maybe just mentioned a tumour and someone got part of the conversation :p

I'm not sure how old he is, will ask when I'm back and see if anyone has spoken to a redwings/donkey sanctuary person, although I think they will have already :)

He'll most likely be left to settle in a bit more and then we'll assess his options and see what's best for him.
