Hey everyone.. After a recent fall (and a twice broken pelvis) I've decided its time to invest in a new body protector. Just wanting some information and opinions on comfort as well as the best protection as its been a long time since I've worn one let alone looked into buying one. I always remember them being bulky and awkward to ride in so I didn't really wear them unless I had to!
Anyway a silly fall at the end of a flat schooling session while cooling down (spooked and caught me off guard) resulted in quite a nasty injury and I have now realised I am not the invincible teenager I once was. I can't imagine there will be anything out there that can protect the lower pelvic area as such but I am interested to find out peoples thoughts on whats best on the market these days. Thanks in advance for any input :)

If you’re not competing then I’d say the air canister ones, hit air or point 2 as they are comfy to wear. I have a race safe and that’s pretty comfortable as it has little squares so it’s not as rigid.

I have a UCG body protector. I am not a fan of body protectors at all, i hate them in general, never wore one and i really struggle to make myself wear it but after a friend had a bad accident i felt compelled and frankly the cost of a "proper" one put me off, but this UCG one was cheap and surprisingly comfortable. I wore it out hacking mostly then got out of the habit of it again...but its still there if i need it and its got squares like a racesafe somewhat so flexible and adjustable. A friend wears the air one and swears by it because you barely feel it but the mere thought of it going off if i take a bit too high a rise scares me too much lol

The most comfortable one will be the one that fits you properly. It made a huge difference getting my second (current) one fitted at a shop by someone who knew what they were doing as opposed to my first one that I fitted myself! I’d say definitely go for one that has mesh covering and air holes in the foam (small blocks are more comfy than a big slab too), as it does make a difference to how hot you get in one, but you’ll need a brand that suits your body shape. I tried both the Racesafe Provent and Airowear Airmesh, and ended up with the latter, which was a better fit. The Racesafe wasn’t comfortable on me because I have too much ‘bay window’ (as my elderly mum would say!).

Racesafe provent - if they fit your body shape. Getting one (any make) professionally fitted will make all the difference to comfort. All the main designs are available in a range of body and back combinations so you should be able to find soemthing that works for you. BETA 2019 (Purple label) is the current standard. If you want safety wear it is a false economy (IMO) to buy less than the current standard or to have a poor fit so it will not work as intended!

Another vote for Racesafe. I only wear mine when it's obligatory so I do feel bulky, but it's so comfortable and flexible it's forgotten after 30 seconds.

I have a HitAir air jacket - the way they expand means that I think it should offer some protection for the pelvis (don't take my word for that, do check). Obviously it's not a body protector but I went for it because it's so comfortable to wear that I always wear it, and I'm not convinced that I would always wear a body protector. It's easy to put on over a jacket and also nice and light in summer.

Just to say, RS fits me well and since childbirth I've gone up to a G cup. There is some adjustment in them and the small blocks allow for good moulding (my waist is still relatively small so you don't need to be a straight up and down type).

Wow thanks everyone for so many comments. I'll definitely look in to the race safe ones and I've just come back from a show and noticed a lot of people wearing USG so I'll check them out too.. never really took in to account my body shape so will make sure I've got someone fitting it who knows what they are doing. Cheers everyone! xx

My husband bought me a Usg one when I returned to riding after a broken pelvis from a fall - it makes him feel better about it but I haven't pointed out it wont save my pelvis ;)
It's pretty comfy and I've got used to wearing it. Only thing I had to get used to was unzipping it before discounting so it doesn't ride up and smack me in the face!
