I've used and adored wood pellets for years but they're too expensive now. I've also used Sundown Green (prefer the Yellow but couldn't get it before now but can again) Probed which I can't stand, the smell makes me cough something chronic and I don't like shavings compared to wood or straw pellets. Straw itself isn't an option - but my favourite.
Last year I used Sun E Bed straw pellets which weren't too bad but is there anything else out there to try please? Different brands, prices?

I'm sure straw will always be the most economical.

I too have always used wood pellets, tried lots of alternatives last year when prices hit £9 a bag (bought in bulk!) but they were nearly as expensive and not as good.

Wood pellet prices are back down again though, currently £360ish for a pallet of 65. I have bought 2!

I use Aquamax as I found I was actually using more of other types of wood pellet so even though at the time Aquamax cost more, in actuality it was cheaper. I think the last delivery I got (full pallet) was just over £8 a bag ☺️

If it's not too cheeky, would you mind PMing where you found them at that price? I can only find £420 for 65.

I'm on miscanthus and straw pellets (easypack) at the moment. On average a bag of straw pellets lasts me a fortnight just in the wee patch and a bag of miscanthus about a week. In winter that can double though, depending on how long my horse has to be in - he's tidy but quite wet.

I tried straw pellets earlier this year, when shavings were hard to come by and very expensive. But the ponies liked the bitter taste of the pellets so I have gone back to shavings again. The price of those has come down now but I dare say all will rise again in the winter.

If youre in the uk you might have luck sourcing miscanthus pellets. Theyre just as effecive if not a bit more at absorbing than wood pellets.

In ireland, shavings are currently the cheapest, weight-wise. Will have to check if wood pellet prices have dropped here as i preferred them as a base layer, because shavings are pathetic for absorbing pee in comparison, weight for weight.

We get ours from White Horse Energy, currently £355 for 65. If you use code GemRic50353 you’ll get 5% off your first order 😊

Friggin’el, ive just found 1 tonne of pellets in ireland for €295! There’s hope at last! Most woodmills still want €520.
There’s some adverts on adverts.ie or pm me if anyone wants a link.

I was using shavings but the extortionate price(over £12 for my favourite shavings!)plus my local shop not stocking the favourite shavings regularly forced me to try chopped straw type bedding. I can get heavenly bedding for just under £7 plus a local saddler sells nice unbranded chopped rape straw for a similar price. Another local shop sells nedzbeds which I really like.
I've used pellets with a previous horse & really don't like them,I don't mind straw but can't cope with the lingering wee smell!

Unibed - chopped rape straw without the added eucalyptus of Probed.
If you order a pallet it's the best price of all
I was paying £5/bale plus delivery.

I hate pellets!
I bought some Unibed chopped miscanthus when wood pellets got expensive, it's ok, £180 for a pallet of 36 bales so £5/bale. I managed to get it collected thru work but otherwise I think it's about 35/plt delivery thru a palletline courier
I haven't totally got used to it, i only use it in shelters/open stables but much prefer wood pellets for absorbancy

I’m a die-hard wood pellet fan but after a few years ‘out’ from buying bedding, the prices shooting up and a house move, I bought a couple of pallets of chopped straw.

Absolutely love it, worked out at less than £4 per bag, a bag goes a long way and it’s really absorbent. I cleaned out a stable I’d been deep littering for a couple of months the other day and only took out half a big wheelbarrow of wet. Very impressed. It’s not dusty at all either.

I like a chopped straw and its varieties, it does go a long way and looks nice but as you say, it's not a patch on absorbency compared to wood pellets especially if you have a wet horse - as Goody is. I think once a convert to WP they'll always the first choice.

Strawmax- the cheapest straw pellet round here. The price when I last bought had not been inflated by covid either but we are quite close to the factory.

Blimey got shavings and pellets last night (I'm stockpiling for new horse) and the Wooburn were £9.50 and the wood pellets were £7.50. Nightmare.
I've been looking at wood pellets in Morrisons but they are not like for like in price/weight.

I think the only way you will save money is if you all club together and buy in bulk, I used to do this with the stable choice shavings that were £7.22 in 2019. But can't get hold of them now.

When wood pellets went up I changed to nedzbedz and find it so much better - wouldn't go back to wood pellets now.

I’ve been using wood pellets for about 5 years but last winter due to the price hike I went onto chopped rape straw with my remaining pellets as a base for wee spots. Fortunately I had enough pellets left to last the winter especially as I was down to one horse. I’m staying on the same combo and have just bought a pallet of the unbranded from WHE to share with a couple of others. I use about one bale of the rape straw a week at £8.85 and one wood pellet every other week during the winter when in all night.

Hi. Where did you get the pallet from?

Thanks

I've just bought pallet of 65 from SDL, £359 including delivery and they arrived within 3 days. I usually go White Horse but their stock levels have been inconsistent when I'm looking to buy.

I use bedmax, EVA mats and only stable for 5 hours and that works out very cheap for us! I can’t use wood pellets because they’re too dusty for the asthmatic.
