Got the horse, unexpectedly found an Ifor Williams but now need to change the car. Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced, economical car to pull an HB505 and 16.1 horse?

I would recommend a Landrover Freelander 2.

I have a 16.2h horse that weighs 597Kg (I recently put him on the weigh bridge)

I have a Ifor Williams 510- which is the big one- unladen weight 1000Kg.

My tow limit on the car is 2000Kg.

I cannot recommend this car enough. I initially went looking for a discovery, only for a land rover sales guy to say- why did I want one? they are heavy and not economical, and for my budget (up to 14K) I could only get one that was 06 at best and with 70k+ miles. He also said why was i paying more to pull someone else's horse! He then suggested the freelander 2.

I got a 57 plate Freelander 2 GS in black with only 33k miles on the clock for £12k from a land rover main dealer. You get a lot more car for your money with them!

It pulls my horse about with no problems what so ever. Hills, muddy fields, dual carriageways I can do 55 with ease (I just don't go faster!) Whilst towing I probably get about 25mpg which is what a disco does normally!

When im not towing and just using it as my general car i love it. About 35mpg driving about town. I recently went away for work thing, it was a 500 mile round trip. I did it on one tank of fuel (about £80) and i wasnt driving slowly.
it drives nicely and is a solid, well built car.

I was dubious at first as Id heard a lot of bad reviews, but whilst I understand that the previous freelander was rubbish, I honestly do think this car is fine for a one horse (and maybe a pony!) family.

Any more questions feel free to pm/ask. :)

Any thing waith a gass conversion! We have a grand cheroki jeep its a 4ltr perol but we had a gass conversion some ten years ago its great! You can now pick up the same car with conversions in place for not nuch money at all.

I'm looking at a Kia sorrento at the moment to pull a hb511.

A friend pulls a 505 no problems with a freelander 2 and another with a Nissan terrano.

I've just got a ford mondeo tdci 2.0 estate after extensive research into most economical towing vehicles as I also need to commute reasonable distance to work in it

It has 2000kgtowing capacity, which is same as most small 4x4s but much better mpg. Also have a 505 and 16.1 Irish type and tows beautifully. Only thing I haven't tried yet is parking on grass at ODEs. Probably fine at moment but if gets muddy might struggle without 4x4. On the other hand the savings on fuel day to day vastly outweigh the possibility of having to be towed out of a field once or twice a year!

I recommend the Kia Sorrento, compared to a Shogun it's very economical. We tow a 505 with one horse, we don't need 2.8 tonne of towing power, but we can get off dodgy ground and have no concerns with hills or motorway towing.

I am same as snow goose. I have a 2 litre tdci Mondeo hatchback and I have an Ifor Williams 505 and a 16hh horse and it tows beautifully. Like snow goose I need my car to be a multipurpose vehicle as well as to transport my horse efficiently.

Thanks everyone - just didn't know where to start and I do want to be able to use the vehicle for work etc so some very useful suggestions.

I've got a Ford Kuga and I love it! Its not a 4x4 but all wheel drive so cheaper tax, does around 35mpg round town and managed similar this weekend pulling my trailer on the motorway. Trailer is a lightweight Bateson and pony is about 450kg but does occasionally take my 16hh mare with no problem. Mine is a 58 model probably pick one up for around £10k now.
