Someone has made about your horse or riding? When we sold my 15.2hh who, at 12 had had enough of showjumping, I was told that if I really cared about my horse I would bike down to the yard every morning before school (We live 24 miles away) to feed him and turn him out myself, that it was my riding that was responsible for him stopping, and I should try things like parelli/mounted games to give him a break from sjing. I struggled to bite my tongue as I was told that my horse was not difficult, if I wanted to ride a difficult horse I should ride hers for a week, and that it was simply that I was boring my horse.
Then as far as Lenny goes, I had all the, "He's too big, he's too much for you," comments, and then people saying he'd actually proved to be very "trainable" recently... I think it was a compliment?

The same stud owner when someone commented on how nice the foal I bred from another homebred this year

"Well it's certainly a vast improvement on the mare"

(I didn't use her stallion for any of the above homebreds!!)
 
My hubby is the best for that. My 16.3 WB who is a big lad has his moments and will tank off when I'm turning him out/bringing him in when he's in one of his moods. Hubby helpfully tells me not to let him go and I must stop him!! How do I do that then darling? We had building work done recently and there were JCBs and concrete mixers all over the place mostly near my school. WB is already a spooky horse so cue mad leaps across school, much snorting etc etc. I gave up as wasn't acheiving anything anyway. Hubby says he has to get used to it! Why? Haven't seen much of that going on at competitions. Aaaahhh got to love him.....or I'D KILL HIM!!
 
I was told I was too big for my pony when I bought him, I'm barely 5'2" and pony is a traditional cob 14hh, then when I saw same person recently whilst riding she said how suited we were

Was having lessons with a dressage instructor who was known for being abrupt and was riding without stirrups. She told me "you're lucky your horse is quite comfortable - a lot of horses aren't suitable for novices to ride without stirrups". Now I know I'm not a great rider, but I've happily hack, jump etc and can ride most things that aren't loonies! Although, to be fair I'm not very good at dressage!

A friend of mine was having a horse back from loan. The same instructor said she was pleased as the loaner wasn't doing the horse any favours. My friend said "yes, I realise I'm not the best rider in the world but....." waited for small compliment. Instead she was told "yes, but you don't do them any actual harm"

I gave up the lessons - she was excellent technically, but no good for my motivation!
 
There is a fairly well known event rider near me who ALWAYS has to make some sort of stupid comment when I see her. When I rode past her yard one day she came out and commented that my horse had a loose shoe (really? I wouldn't have noticed) and asked which farrier I used - like it was his fault the horse needed shoeing! Also been "told off" by her out hunting for holding my hunting whip upside down when I had actually just used it to give my horse a bit of a whack. I could go on. I used to take it to heart but now I just laugh at her.

When I had my mare on full livery and out hacking with the YO,he was behind me when he said 'God she is getting fat!'
All the others nearly fell off their horses when I turned round in the saddle and said'Well if your referring to me, then I better diet and if your referring to my mare then that's down to you as she is in your care and on your yard!'

My old instructor told me not to buy my current horse because he was 'too experienced' and I wouldn't be able to do BSJA with him because hes won too much money and will only lose value not put value on! My horse has taken me from strength to strength and Ive gone from being scared of jumping to 3'3 opens, so she was absolutely wrong - buying a schoolmaster is the best thing Ive ever done and I dont care if hes worth 10p, hes priceless to me!
Note - she sold me the horse before, which was a complete looney that wrecked my confidence, and before I got my boy sold me an evil witch mare that had to go back to her cos it double barrelled me in the stable. She is no longer my instructor!!
 
Just remembered... I had taken my new 14.2hh to a local show to do evening sj. A girl who always won the classes on horses worth probably ten times as much as mine, and always had the best training, horses etc, came second to me in the open, prompting her to say, "Well, i'm not used to being THIS side of you in the line up!" She never beat me again :P
 
A new livery gave me a b*llocking for saying hello to her pony (thought I'd been giving it apples???) then promptly told me she'd examined one of mine's feet and it had laminitis as it was lame, but she couldn't find any heat.

That'll be the arthritis then, I replied....

She then told me I should be giving it devil's claw instead of Danilon, as it's better for their livers. Absolutely, I agreed, but she is being pts in October.... Some people!

When I was 16 my horse was kept at a riding school and used for the advanced riding lessons. One day my instructor turned to me and said 'why is it your horse goes better with everyone else except you?' How to completely knock a teenagers confidence!! 10 years on and I'm just starting to be OK with people riding my horses again.
 
I got a HS1 skull cap for my birthday, and a small child at Pony Club said to me:
'I like you hat, isn't that what all the good riders wear?'
Me: 'Thanks ermm yes I suppose'
Pause...
Her:'Why have you got one then?'

Bless her, she had no idea what she had just said!

Also someone once said to me about a pony I had a few years ago..
'I really like your pony...because he's soooo lazy'

Backhanded compliment or what!

There's a fab lady at our yard, who teaches me and my friend. She is extremely knowledgeable but doesn't mince her words. When she first met my friend's horse (nice TB/ID working hunter type) and was told my friend wanted to do workers, hunter classes on him, she sighed and said 'well, I suppose round here that should be ok' (we are quite remote where we're based).
Once, for a joke, I asked her what she would show the mare as if she was hers. Taking me seriously and without missing a beat she replied 'I wouldn't show her' and carried on with what she was doing.
My friend and I were in fits.

My mare is a total loony and spooks alot, nine out of ten times we stick together and I've become very good at staying with her! Up until Thursday night when I was unceremoniously dumped in the village.......cue mares owner........when you feel she's going to spook sit tight!!! If I knew she was going to spook I'd be sat tight and probably still be on her now!

Also my boss at work (who's daughter produces show ponies) While discussing breeding the other mare we have, she piped in 'eurgh what with that thing?!?' meaning my little mare!!!

When Buddy was 2 and a half i had a lady on yard which i had just onto and she had a right grudge against welsh horses. As Buddy is TB x welsh sec d she tried everything to try and get me to sell him.

She told me that because of him being part welsh and so called spooky temperament i would never be able to lunge him or get a saddle on him...(i put saddle on him last christmas first time and he didnt bother about it at all, i also lunged him and although was a bit stiff on one side he lunged fine).

She also told me i should sell him and buy something older so that i could ride...(like really its your own choice whether you buy a youngster or not).

She told me i would never be able to sit on him and he would bolt and rear if i tried...(although not 100% sound to ride yet as just started backing i can sit and walk around on him without any problems).

I found out after she had put her young cob up for sale as she was looking for another youngster with a bit more go than what her cob had.
 
Slack arse. By an irish eventer who was teaching me. I thought it was rather amusing although my seat has improved quite since then.
 
When my Dad was doing the timing for an ODE, his friend turned to him and said about a random unknown rider who had just passed, "She fills her jods well doesn't she?!" I would hate to know what they say about me!
 
A friend said to me "I really admire you continuing to jump, I would have given up long ago"!!!! He meant it as a compliment to my perseverence as I am reknowned for falling off jumping and always get back on and have another go, but it came out so funny. Luckily for him he is a long time close friend and it just made me giggle. He was mortified!!


Nastiest most insidious comment I have had (not directly) was when my nieces were younger and they were riding and playing with my sister's young horse (nicely - we wouldn't allow anything else and he adores the kids, always has and being a welshie loves attention and play). The current yard witch at the time (all into NH and fluffy bunny (read scared) to her horses, but an absolutely cow to people) strolled past and went "ahhhh poor "insert horse name", you really hate children don't you"

My nieces who were about 7 and 9 at the time were devastated and I was extremely angry (and I did deal with the issue!!!) Luckily she left in the end (errrmmm nothing to do with the fact that she had ostricised nearly everyone on the yard!).

Funny thing the children hating pony is 4 years later loving pony club and doing really well.........

Last year after a long gallop up foredown on Bodmin Moor, some chavvy boy racer type people were gathered in the parking area (only 2 cars but several lads and 2 girls). It's an AONB but they gather up there and have chav-burgers on their chav-bbqs and then race down the straight road. When I got to the top and got into walk, I could sense that they were looking/talking about me (I am hyper-sensitive and most of the time I am not right), so I looked over and they WERE! I carried on riding, with my husband next to me riding our mare, and one of the lads shouted really loud 'you fat b*tch, it's you that needs the f*****g exercise, not the horse. You should be reported for animal cruelty'. I was absolutely horrified, not least because there was a couple with some children flying a kite on the moor and they heard/saw everything.

As the two cars sped off, they were all hanging out their window, beeping their horns and shouting obsenities at me. I stopped and burst into tears and this little family came to see if my husband and I were OK, which made me feel even more embarrassed!! As soon as they were out of site and the racers had gone, I got off my horse and led him all the way home rather than riding him, as I was so ashamed. It was about 3 miles home from there. I have never felt so sick with embarrassment in all my life. I think I cried all afternoon.

The owner of the yard where we take the horses on holiday, and who has become a great friend, came to see me and gave me a kick up the ass. She is extremely experienced and said that she knew this was playing on my fear that I had got too big for George since being ill (I had pneumonia and was in intensive care, which then led to mental illness and I gained weight), but there is no way I am too big for him, based on his build and the way he carries me as well as the way I ride.

It really shook my confidence. Just a bunch of louts who know nothing about riding and the fact that it actually IS exercise.

Makes me cry just thinking about it.
 
When i bought Erik my mum and i put him in the stable to settle down and one of the women on the yard came over and said 'What have you bought him for? He is a physical f**k up' This was all because he has got a bent ear and he was a bit different. 2 Weeks later when i was lungeing him she came over and said' Isn't he looking fantastic he is so handsome'.

I was also out hacking one of my friends ponies, Sepp(haflinger), he is beautiful and real good fun and i bumped into someone i knew which was on a fat highland. She looked at me and the horse and said 'Why are you riding a haflinger they are spooky, out of control, pushy, and unpredictable!' I replied 'Thats just how i like them' and galloped off leaving her gobsmacked.

People can be so mean
 
My YO (who is 78 and an utter star) said to me last week "There is no doubt you were the smartest turned out lady at that show, you scrub up so well and really look like you know what you're doing............until you actually get on board. I'd stick to posing on the side lines myself".

Took my horse in a novice SJ class many years ago. He was having a good day for once and we got through to the jump off, with one other person; a friend of mine. So we both went for it and I won. Anyway, in the line up she claimed she'd 'let me win' because she didn't want to 'de-novice' herself (neither her nor the horse were blooming novices anyway, just hadn't done much sj together). Q raised eyebrows and a 'pfff' sound coming from me.

Not horsey but my husband says he like my hair when I 'do it frizzy', grrr! It's naturally curly but usually GHD'ed to within an inch of its life!!

Was out hacking with a (ex) friend. She used a saddle saver and it always used to slip so we had to faff around for ages while she fiddled with it. I asked her why she bothered and she said it was because she got saddle sore as she "wasn't so well padded as me"

Same friend with the nice ID / TB was getting seriously irritated by a girl on our old yard who just went on and on and on and on about her horse and how it was so amazing and talented (honestly, you'd be forgiven for thinking it had a degree in rocket science all on its own) and eventually she turned round and said what we'd all secretly been thinking:
'yes, but he's ugly'
Poor girl didn't say a peep for days!
