"Most horses rear and buck at some point" (?)

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
Every single one of my horses has bucked at least once out of excitement. PF bucks like fury on the lunge

[/ QUOTE ]

Ernie bucks on the lunge...we are talking about under saddle though aren't we?

[/ QUOTE ]
She bucks under saddle too

But very seldom.
I don't count bucking on the lunge at all. Otherwise I'd never dare get on either of my two!

I don't think it is. I don't think not falling off is anyway to judge your skill as a rider.

Nor is the length of time you've been riding.

Not saying you're not a good rider marmite, but I judge people's skill on the level of competition they are at, how well they cope with different horses, and improvements they have made to young or difficult horses. Obviously thats a very simplistic explanation, but I am sure you understand what I mean.

Simply saying you've been riding for a long time and hardly fallen off doesn't mean very much at all IMO. If you've only fallen off 6 times in about 20 years, I'm afraid I would probably think that you've not done anything terribly challenging.

ahhhhh see i agree with you there - a lot of people will blame the horse for rearing - i know with Archie he generally does it if hes having a strop or nervous about something. The nervous rears came about when i first starting competing him and he hated leaving the other horses and being on his own in the areana. Now his confidence has grown he is much happier, and obviously know hes learning to trust me too.

but then to me it does because i have ridden some sob in my time and im very proud i have not been dunked too often but i dont think it makes any less of a rider to fall not at all im glad i havent fallen much because i dont like pain and i bruise like a blumming peach.

the point i was making before they started was that old wifes tale winds me up its rubbish i did not say i think any less of anyone elses riding there are some cracking riders on here.

[ QUOTE ]
well why shouldnt i be i have ridden some fabby horses and i got a bloody good seat been riding since the age of 3 and i have had no more than 6 falls.

and before people start saying the old wifes tale the more you fall off the more you have done and the better rider you are dont because its rubbish.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've ridden 100k 4* horses, been riding since I was teeny but it doesn't make me any good though!

P_G took a national title but I bet she doesn't think she's 'bloody fab'!

exactly thats where the old wifes tale stems from it does not mean you havent been challenged just luck of the draw you stay on dont get me wrong the few times i have dropped it has resulted in bad injuries so in some ways that could be worse.

i didnt say i was bloody fab i said i had ridden some fabby horses which i have i had the good luck to work with a very good trainer.

Hmmmmmmm so im a bad rider then because my horse rears?

[/ QUOTE ]

Personaly i think P_G is a bloody brilliant rider, if a horse has it in its head it is going to rear, you cant stop it, its stronger than you!

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanx! I wouldnt go that far!!

But i agree with what you are saying - if Archie wants to slam in a rear he will, il hit him tho to send him forwards and he generally throws in some bucks after that.

To say that bad riders cause rearers is total crap, sorry.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think she means that perhaps in his younger years, before you bought him something triggered the rearing...

[ QUOTE ]
I think you are a very good rider. I think there are plenty horses which rear esp with the advent of so many warmbloods BUT I think there are too many riders (not anyone in this thread - as I only know a few people on here) who will not admit they might be at fault and generally blame the horse.

[/ QUOTE ]

'If your horse says no, you either asked the wrong question or asked the question wrong'...no matter what you may think of him I think thats a good saying.

Seriously though, 6 falls in 20+ years?

If you really ride all these incredibly difficult horses, you must have the most miraculous seat in the world.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

Me neither, depends on horses/activities you compete in/how often you ride e.t.c

[ QUOTE ]
Nor is the length of time you've been riding..

[/ QUOTE ]

Haha so true, some people can only improve so far...Someone near me has heaps of lessons and he still looks like he's going to fall of yet he's been riding for years...

seriously but i have taken breaks here and there so it wont be twenty in total to tally it up would be more like 15 years.

But my first fall was at 7 and i broke my arm

then it was ribs, coxyx [tail bone lol cant spell it] my nose, bad concust once and last time jacob dropped me outside the pub in village but i was fine.

oh and actaully i tell a lie eska dropped me once aswell so its seven.

lol

There was a girl at an old yard I was at who always bragged she'd been riding 10 years and was great. She bought this pony from Ireland, cracking jump, really well schooled, and she couldn't get it in an outline for love nor money, and just about managed to do crosspoles.

Funny, I could have swore I put the title and OP about bucking and rearing horses....

but then i like it on the edge of my seat i like my horse with a spring in its step and raring to go.

[/ QUOTE ]

You can have a horse with a spring in its step and raring to go without it bouncing about all over excited - trust me, I have two of them at the mo!

Good lord !! This is a right old battle this thread eh?

Well I have been riding for 15 years and thank god and touch wood I have never had a rearing horse!! But have had plenty bucking - hee hee

What would people rather be - bucked off or reared off?

Just a thought ?

give me a rearer anyday [let the slanging commence]

but my personal opinion [not my opinion against or for anyone else] is a bucker can buck from almost any speed but yet a rearer is stationary therefore if you need to bale you can.

I've read through the WHOLE thread, like a good girl

.

anyway, I'd agree, most horses will buck OR rear (sometimes both) in their lifetime.

But if someone said their horse had never bucked or reared I wouldnt call them a liar. Most horses will only buck or rear in protest at being pushed beyond their comfort zone, or in very high jinx, so if the seller hadnt put the horse in a situation where he would do that then they're telling the truth...

Hmmmm....only had one rear on me and that went over backwards and squished me, was the most bizarre feeling, hanging in mid air *knowing* what was about to happen but totally unable to do anything to stop it
crazy.gif

Been bucked off a few times and the most serious incident hurt like hell, ended up with concussion....was totally my fault though.
Would rather neither of them had happened tbh, to answer your question in a totally non commital way
grin.gif

About being reared or bucked off, from my experience rears are ok to sit to unless they go over backwards or nearly, when its not nice because they can squash you and break you pelvis.

Nasty bucks are very quick and you end up head down on the floor and you get concussion.

On balance if i had to fall off i'd rather be bucked off, but if i wasnt falling off rearing.

Well assuming the horse wasn't going over on top of me, I'd rather fall off from a rear. Easier to just slide down and land on your feet.

When a horse broncs it can have the nasty effect of propelling you headfirst into the ground - as I have experienced
grin.gif

However would rather be bucked off anyday than have a horse go over on me.
