A friend just sent me a pic of her first horse which she sold 30 years ago. At age 35 this mare did not look her age and was even still in light, regular work until recently!!!!!!!!! However, she has deteriorated now - her joints are getting sore and the vet feels it is kindest to have her pts after a happy summer. She was a lippazaner.

Any other stories of horses working happily to a ripe old age?

I am also quite amazed that my friend kept in touch with her owners for 30 years and it was lovely that they asked her if she wanted to visit to say goodbye.

Remember reading an article on riding holidays in Your Horse or similar some years ago. The author had used a stables in the West of Scotland which had Appaloosas, and all the horses on that particular ride were over 30, and a couple were nearer 40.
