So, I'm having a crappy day today!!

The horses are all going rubbish. It doesn't help that my arena is 3m from a building site and the diggers are going all the time.

I just wondered how does everyone motivate themselves in the winter? I feel like we have been in winter for over a year now, due to the horrible summer we had.

Any ideas on how to kick myself up the backside would be truly appreciated!!!

I can sympathise with you on this one.

I hate the winter months. I have to work the horses by myself and unless I'm entered for a competition, I find it so hard to get motivated at this time of year.
There is no one to bounce ideas off, no one to push you or to tell you off if you don't feel like doing anything!

It's so different when the sun is shining and the birds are singing and you haven't got so many layers on that you can't walk!

Sorry, I haven't been much help but I do know where you're coming from!

thanks Bananaman! I like you am on the yard doing the horses by myself.

And when you have a day like today where things go wrong I don't have that horsey pair of eyes on the ground that can just give you a little tip to make it all better. (I am hoping to save up for some mirrors to help on that front!!)

I have 1 livery on the yard but she hardly ever comes and she is very novicey so not much help in that respect.

Think sometimes if you can just have a moan and a whinge to likeminded people then it helps you to realise that you are not alone!!!!

I can sympathise with you TE. I find even a phone conversation with a horsey friend at an opportune moment can get things off my chest and make me feel better. Don't be so hard on yourself either and go into a downward spiral - most other people wouldn't even bother trying to ride with the diggers nearby, so you're stealing a march on them!

I like the expression "keep on keeping on"; that about sums it up for me at this time of year.

It was blissful today... felt like a summer's evening and it makes such a different that its still light 'till nearly 5.30. Makes SUCH a difference when humans, horses and stables aren't always muddy and wet.

The only thing interupting our atmosphere are the diggers removing our crappy outdoor surface which was only put in in September

I am so glad others feel like this!

I have just started having regular lessons again on Hannah, but before this I was getting really down about everything because it seems I am always riding in the dark, don't have enough hours in the day, and have one horse misbehaving and have to walk the other out morning and night no matter what the weather!!!

But tonight, it was actually light at 5pm and what a difference that makes

It is hard when you are on your own and don't have a pair of eyes on the ground, but I find having a lesson gives me things to work on... I know we are only at Novice/Elementary level, but the lessons give me clarity somehow

ok, diggers are nearby.......get yourself an ipod, put some good music on and ride to the music!!!!!!! La de la!!! Bananaman has some great tunes to recommend!! Singing in the rain, the sun has got its hat on, its raining men... get the idea!!!!!Yes it is hard to motivate but be positive and forget about mud, dirt, etc.......use your imagination........I try........with difficulty!!!!1

Oh I so know that one, I am fed up with mucking out in the dark, dealing with mud and rain and wind and etc etc etc. It is so hard trying to motivate yourself to ride in the evening when its dark and you are trying to fight for the flooded 20 x 40m school with 4 other people. Don't get me wrong my yard is great and the facilities are great but I do wish summer would hurry up.

Tut!! Come on all........winter is fun..!!!!!!!!!! Dark nights are great....eat more carrots!!!!!! Mud, fab for the face, rain great for washing off muddy jods, boot, your horse cannot be turned out.......make use of energy and explosiveness!!!!!!.......ok......I give in.........winter sucks.......

do you mean feel my arse as the saddle smacks up the backside thanks to the spooking? or perhaps my head when I land on it!!!! ha ha!

go on, you know you want to come and experience it too.... we could do a pas de deux of spooking in time to the music of diggers!!
