I have been having problems when out hacking on my boy with motorbikes. He hates them with a passion.

However today my instructor got her other half to drive his motorbike up and down the side of the school at the start of my lesson and my lad really did me proud and got a grip of himself. He wasn't perfect when the motorbike was being revved but he certainly improved the more it went past.

Just thought I would share that with you as it made my day :)

We are in Lancashire. Going to keep trying to ride while someone rides a motorbike up and down I think. Its a good start if nothing else :) He seems to have a problem with a revving engine as sports cars have spooked him before now as well.

Well done!

I bet you were more relaxed about it, than when you meet a bike on a hack, as well. The recording is a good idea and also carry on getting someone to ride just outside the arena, progressing to getting even closer, is a very good strategy. It will help you both to get used to motorbikes.

Thank you Pearlsasinger :) I was a little more relaxed but got better the more the bike went past. I think it will take some practice before he is listening to me properly and not concentrating on the motorbike but not running sideways is a good start!

My other half has a KTM with aftermarket pipes. I've never batted an eyelid when he pulls onto the yard with it within 10ft sometimes of the horse standing there. No one else has made it an issue, even if the horse does freak out, and the result is, a yard full of horses that mildly nod his way when he pulls up. We'd rather this than an adverse reaction on the road!

My husband has a stable of super bikes too (R1,R6 & the like)
We also have a yard of motorbike proof horses 😄

As those that have ready access to bikes have proved it does make a big difference. You could always ask your local MC club if anyone would fancy going to a few de-nerving days to help, maybe get some other friends too and make it a party.

I find exposing them to the real thing in a safe environment is a great way to getting them over it, my filly freaked out at a motorcross bike in the woods. luckily my dad has very loud noisy vintage vellocettes and I had him bring it onto the field at the yard in front of or schooling paddocks when the other horses were away over the hill in summer field. I started with her on my long line in arena and just had my dad sat there fire up his bike I waited for her to calm down then led her around him and let her investigate, I then moved her away and he revved a bit and rode around and again I waited for her to finsh panicking over I and realise she didn't give a monkies after all. I then repeat under saddle once ready. I've doen this with lots of thinks over the years tractors trailer, screaming kids, dogs find it very effective.

Mines like that with tractors. The farm left his out the other day. So i took the opportunity to walk him over to it and within a min or two he was eating a mint off the tyre. I still need to do more work. Will get him to put the engine on next time. Then get him to watch it driving around
