Motorway breakdown

I have, unfortunately due to bad luck, used ERSS several times, and although it takes a while for them to get to you, i can't fault them. Have transferred horses to a different box, and once we were within hacking distance so just off loaded and hacked back.Never, touch wood, needed them on a motorway, and I hope I never do.
 
Sadly if you do a search on here Anthony evans or rather Autohome who they use as their recovery agents do not come up trumps. Autohome has only one big recovery wrecker suitable to pull horse lorries. The recovery part with Anthony Evans is much cheapness and they sneakily put it in the small print as well!

Here is a breakdown literally of whoo uses who

SEIB uses equity red star who do seem to use low loaders to transport your horse on board still in the lorry highly illegal and highly dangerous. They also get the recovery booys to lift up lorries again with horses on board!

Anthony Evans uses Autohome. One large recovery wrecker only and they tow a lot of horses this way unless the owner kicks off. Your wait is due to them not sub contracting out!

Shearwater use Equine Rescue Services. They have the largest nationwide recovery and network of horse transporters to get you home.

NFU use PRP formerly known as OHTO. Again use a network of recovery agents and network of horse transporters to get you home.

Although it IS cheaper to do the add on with your insurance company ALWAYS check the small print to make sure what you are paying for is what you are getting on the stand alone recovery policy.

Although we insure with NFU we declined the extra cover as take out a stand alone policy with Equine Rescue Services.

Have used them for a tyre blow out and to be towed to the garage. Cannot fault either times. Perfect service, kept informed every step of the way. Lorry that got towed home was easy and simple and even the dogs came on the wrecker! Very friendly service and worth every penny.

If you calculate how much a recovery of the lorry would cost then the onward transport of the horse from any distance from home, you are knocking easily on the door of 1500+ more if you are taking a lot of horses like to scotland for a show!

So just check WHAT you are paying for. I heard through the grapevine that Equity Red Star refused to pick up 7 people in a 7.5t which had taken 2 horses to a in hand county show. Despite the policy holder shouting at the control room saying that the children had come out with both adults they refused to budge on the fact that 5 people only should ever be assisted!

Plus the poor client hit the roof when it was suggested by Equity Red Star that the lorry with the horses on board goes on the low loader! Luckily she knew the law and stood firm and they did send out a horse transporter.

So read that small print and don't get caught short!

And what ever you do DO NOT GET TOWED nor stuck on a LOW LOADER for ANY long distance! A short distance to safety is allowed ie to get off a motor way but you are talking of the NEXT junction. If the lorry cannot be moved IE rear axle has fallen off then of course the Police have no option but to close the road and allow the transfer of horses from the stricken lorry to the horse transporter.

I just want to say that at the top end of the equine vehicle breakdown industry, we only use specialist horse transport to recovery horses if your vehicle can't be fixed by the roadside, we never use low-loaders, we always keep you informed of progress and we really do care.:)

Equine Rescue - are you Equine Rescue Services?? Just trying to figure out my options for when I buy my lorry.
 
As international horse transporters we use Equine Rescue Services for our fleet recovery.

They have their own dedicated control room and look after you from start to finish. We use a stand alone policy with them.

Home or abroad Equine Rescue Services are there for us and all our lorries. They give a first class service, they know about horses and that is a must if you are dealing with them, they know their rescue fleet and who to send out and use.

We are of course a recovery agent for all the equine breakdown recovery companies.

I would say to people CHECK and read your small print and what ever you do, do NOT allow your horse to get pulled on to a low loader or dragged behind a wrecker to get home. This is NOT legal at all under DEFRA regulations on horse transport but you allowing it to take place lets a couple of the companies mentioned get away with it.

You can only be towed away off a motor way or dual carriage way for safety reasons and this is usually under the direction of Highways Agency or Police and that is if your lorry can be moved. If it cannot then obviously we will do the transfer of horses on the road usually closed by the police, from the stricken lorry to one of ours.

So today, go and get your policy out and check the small print! If its cheap find out why, you may find yourself having to pay to get towed home as your basic policy taken out for £60 doesn't actually cover the recovery of the horse! A bit pointless paying for it when it comes up short!

Breaking down is hard enough as it is let alone with your own horses and your family on board and somehow when you call up expecting to be rescued but instead told you have to pay for the wrecker and you have to get your own family home!

Check and change if necessary!
